#agu2023 was a blast! I shared my research on intertidal oyster reefs and sea-level rise, and learned so much from other scientists, including my @UNCims and @UNC_EMES colleagues 🌊 @UNC @UNCResearch
I’m preparing oyster shell samples for radiocarbon dating from reefs buried deep below the surface. It only takes a tiny bit of shell! @UNCims@UNC_EMES @UNCResearch Research funded by @USCRP 🦪

Did you know that Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginiana) play a crucial role in maintaining healthy coastal waters? Each one of these filter feeders can purify up to 50 gallons of water a day!
Summer field season has officially begun! ☀️These cores through fringing oyster reefs in NC estuaries will tell a story of natural reef growth over hundreds or even thousands of years @UNC_EMES@UNCims@joshimmel
Relic tree trunks were exposed following the storm event that resulted in a house collapse in Rodanthe on 3/13/23. Pics with exposed trunks taken on 3/14 and pics with tree trunks covered by sediment deposition taken just two days later on 3/16. Both during low tide. #obx
Happy 88th birthday, Carl Sagan. You were a visionary and continue to be an inspiration for all of us. I hope we can honor you today by reflecting on your wise words on the famed voyager image of our home, Earth. Look up and read the full passage if you can.
In other news... say goodbye to the S-Curves. Work began today on removal of pavement and sandbags on 2 miles of Old NC 12 bypassed by the Rodanthe Bridge. It will eventually be returned to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge in its natural state: https://t.co/bNCVF0fnuy
Visiting natural oyster reefs near Carrot Island, NC with the Fodrie Lab! We boated through the marshes at low tide so more of the reef was exposed for sampling and surveying. @UNCims Also saw some wild horses 🐎
Hurricane Ian had weakened tremendously by the time it made it to southeast NC, but with the high tide and onshore winds, large quantities of water were forced up the beach and caused erosion on our local beaches. Check out some of the post storm photos from Bird Island Reserve!
Our manuscript was accepted for publication in @FrontiersIn Built Environments! This collaboration between @ArmyERDC and @SouthernMiss Geospatial Center found that plant material washed up on the beach can be used to improve dune resiliency. @UNCims@UNC

I'd been watching the cams today, and the water levels didn't seem to recede after the high tide this afternoon. It looks like conditions will persist for the next two high tide cycles too.
