@thebooksdesk Depends on the books (of course), but definitely shifted downwards - used to be $2-$5 for popular fiction within a few months of release (after six months or so, most places weren’t interested)
#NowWatching on the say-so of @morrbeat, the name I trust when it comes to VOD action, DOMINIQUE, which was clearly made for loose change but has a good whack of gritty, sweaty, life-is-cheap energy. Australia should make five of these a year
If you were an overseas viewer with no idea who any of the real-life characters in LAST KING OF THE CROSS s2 are, you would 100% come away from the final episode convinced that the mystery gunman in the second last scene was Kyle Sandilands
@RobertGuyDavis It’s not a great price difference, you get the blu ray either way, and the 4K disc is region free (which I’m assuming your 4K player may not be as far as blu rays are concerned) - personally I’ve been going for the 4K editions and I don’t even have a 4K player yet
My debut novel DOUBLE HAPPINESS is out in the world now! An unconventional, philosophical love story set in Melbourne over 7 years. Thanks to @thebooksdesk and MidnightSun Publishing for taking a chance. #Polyamory#nonmonogamy
Tip for Melbourne film makers: now that they’ve dropped in a few shiny high rises, there’s no better location for your gritty cyberpunk thriller than the centre of Footscray
@IrkthePurists I’d have said 9.30, but that’s based on my extremely vague memories of watching it as it went out. I also suspect the first series wasn’t a huge hit compared to other ABC comedy - the vibe around the 80s playground was that they didn’t get good until their commercial tv specials
The vibe around here is rapidly changing from "a bunch of haters who are just doing a bit and are decent enough people offline" to "a bunch of haters who are just bone-deep haters all day every day"
@vline_geelong The Next 5 feature hasn’t been working on iOS (well, my current devices at least) for a while now - hopefully this fix will sort that out as well
I'm somewhat fond of Australian crime drama, and while this season is a slow starter, the two lead characters / brothers in LAST KING OF THE CROSS are easily compelling enough to keep you watching. My review for @ScreenHub: https://t.co/VPp7aPo2k1
Pretty sure I already saw this a decade ago when I walked into a cinema toilet after a media screening to find Melbourne’s top critic / promo t-shirt billboard in a cubicle naked from the waist down
Film reviewing was never a bustling field or anything, but it was once an actual job a handful of people (even in Melbourne) could make a living at. And now it’s not
A combination of factors has largely pushed me out of film reviewing over the last year or so and yeah, once you’re outside that bubble it’s really, really clear just how far down the profession has been pushed by every other part of the film business
And like the rest of the media, English language film criticism has consolidated globally to the point where maybe two dozen people matter worldwide - and last time I checked, none of them were in Australia
