At the Microsoft South Africa town hall I bumped into former SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter. He is one of those great South Africans I truly admire.

The work he and his team did turning SARS around has been phenomenal.

He told me his first leadership job was at Eskom. They bet on a young man with enormous potential. In the early 1990s it was uncommon for a coloured person to run a power station and manage largely white teams. He won people over one by one - through focused actions that showed he saw them as individuals and that he cared. He went on to become, by his own account, one of the first people of colour in South Africa to run a power station.

He also shared how they introduced local methods of maintaining turbines and rotors instead of shipping them to original equipment manufacturers, cutting both cost and time. He has a nose for improving productivity while motivating people.

What I appreciated most was his focus on discipline. He spoke about how work from home has damaged culture and how disengaged some employees become when they join meetings only via Teams. At SARS he insisted that those based in Gauteng attend his management meetings in person - including union shop stewards, who in many organisations are treated as untouchable.

In my observation, the decline in performance across both private and public sectors is linked to this issue of discipline. Too many leaders and managers are uncomfortable leading and managing. Difficult conversations are not their cup of tea. Standards slip. Even high performers start asking why they should go the extra mile when there are no consequences for those who simply do not show up.

I call it tough love - the leadership style that combines a big heart with discipline and the willingness to have difficult conversations.

That is the standard we need if we are serious about building a country that works. #LeadershipMatters #ProudlySA

Dr. Nolitha Vukuza is the lady who is the bedrock of the Commission. After Chair Madlanga and Co-Commissioners, this is the person you do not mess with. 😅 Her powers are legislated in the Commissions Act 8 of 1947 and the Presidential Terms of Reference (TORs)

■ PhD in Education and Policy Studies - Stellenbosch University
■ Masters in Industrail Social Work - She is a Clinical Social Worker
■ Diploma in Tertiary Education - UNISA

■ Served as Higher Education and Training Attache/Diplomatic Representative at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), International Labour Ornanization (ILO), and the European Union (EU) as well as Switzerland and Germany and was based in Paris, France.
■ Upon returning to SA she served as a Senior Executive Director at the University of Johannesburg responsible for University Relations, Student Affairs and UJ Sport and member of the Management Executive Committee.
■ Trustee of First Rand Foundation
■ Council Member: Nelson Mandela University
■ Head of Corporate Relations: SAB Miller
■ Lecturer, Social Work - University of Transkei

FUNCTIONS ACCORDING TO THE ACT:
■ She holds administrative, governance, and operational powers to manage the Commission's infrastructure and execute formal directives from the Chairperson.
■ Executing Legal Directives: Acts as the designated official functionary instructed by the Chairperson (Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga) to initiate legal processes, such as formally laying criminal charges against non-compliant witnesses who fail to appear before the inquiry, like Carrim, Khan and others who will defy the Commission in future..
■ Manages the overall administrative operations, organizational workflow, and institutional compliance of the inquiry.
■ Keeps custody of all official hearing records, documentation, evidence logs, and transcripts.
■ Oversees support staff, coordinates schedules, and assists in implementing operational protocols necessary for the public hearings.

Doctor, Ma'am, we take our hats off in recognising the huge, critical role you play as the glue that holds everything together in the Commission. The proceedings that come on our screens look almost perfect and seamless in terms of coordination and how smooth they are. We are therefore not surprised that you are the woman behind all of that. We also appreciate how stressful it must be in the back office, but you carry that stress on with such grace and dignity. 🥹❤️

Communications students, if you ever need a case study of Subtext. This is IT! It is basically the meaning beneath words and in this case, also the meaning behind action. It is what someone really means but doesn't say openly. What the ANC is basically saying to us is "Sidiniwe. Asisafuni. We are done and spent. Please vote for others. We don't even have the basic will and competence to put our candidates on the ballot." That's the message.

When I was invited to the SAPS national excellence awards in 2023 or 2024 at Gallagher Estate, Midrand, Gen Lebeya walked up to our table to greet me. We exchanged pleasantries. We were happy to reconnect after more than a decade not seeing each other. Sibiya looked on with disdain. I already had info about Sibiya hobnobbing with criminals at the time. I’m experiencing a meltdown because of the massive respect I had for Lebeya. He has disappointed me. If someone had told me about his performance at #MadlangaCommission I wasn’t going to believe them. But I heard him with my own ears. I’m in denial. Why grootman?
