This is a welcome clarification, but there are two major problems.

1️⃣ Israel’s right to act against Hezbollah does not require waiting for Hezbollah to attack again. It has a right to act because Hezbollah is a dangerous terrorist army, and it’s on the loose on our border threatening another October 7.

We don’t have to wait for more soldiers to come home in coffins to take defensive action against an immediate threat.

2️⃣ The US should make clear: Israel’s right to pursue Hezbollah is not limited to a protective perimeter near the border. Hezbollah warlords in Beirut are fair targets. They do not get immunity just because the Iranian regime might threaten retaliation to shield them. The US must reaffirm its strategic interest in separating Iran from Lebanon. Anything else strengthens the IRGC’s stranglehold on Lebanon at a time it’s trying to make peace.

3️⃣ President Trump’s statement this week that a Hezbollah drone attack on northern Israel was “very small and meaningless” sent a dangerous message to Iran that the US will force Israel to tolerate aggression under a certain threshold. It should be clarified immediately that there is zero tolerance for any Hezbollah attacks.

Even Obama or Biden might have handled Iran better than this. JD Vance signing his dream deal with Tehran is like signing a PEACE DEAL with a SHARK and then acting surprised when it STILL BITES. Trump shouldn't play business with Middle Eastern politics. In the Middle East, it's soccer-football. Israel knows the pitch better. The Islamic regime in Iran treats every agreement like extra time, KEEP BREAKING the RULES and HOPE the REFEREE NEVER blows the final whistle.

No deal is better than a bad deal. If Iran won't dismantle its nuclear and missile programs, stop funding terrorism, and keep the Strait of Hormuz open, then close this file the way you closed Obama's Iran file, and finish the job.

Hezbollah and its command center in Tehran knew full well that they were attacking sovereign Israeli territory. They also knew that any response would likely come in Beirut.

They chose this course because they are trying to establish a new equation: one in which Tehran can mock the West, continue directing proxies to attack and kill Israeli civilians- whether through drones, missile fire, or cross-border invasions- while enjoying immunity itself and extending that immunity to proxies in across.the region.

No Israeli Gov would have accepted such an equation, and no government should.

הרפובליקה האסלאמית, במהלך ערמומי ביותר יוצאת מהאירוע הזה כשהיא מייחסת לעצמה את היכולת לקפל את נשיא המעצמה הגדולה ביותר - לאחר טבח בלתי נתפס באזרחיה, תוך הנעת מערך תודעתי ענף בתוך ארה״ב, מינוף נתיבי הסחר והאנרגיה העולמיים, ויצירת לחץ דיפלומטי דרך מי שהתגלו כשלוחותיה ומגינותיה יותר מכל דבר אחר: פקיסטן, תורכיה ומדינות המפרץ (האחרונות שבהן חפצות ביקרו של המשטר, מסתבר, חרף אלפי ההפגזות שחטפו - או אולי דווקא בגללן).

טראמפ נתון ללחצים כבדים מאוד כבר חודשים ארוכים. הוא שומע מכל מדינות האזור ואפילו מתוך הבייס שלו שישראל היא הבחור הרע, מערער היציבות, ושהמלחמה במשטר חייבת להיפסק. לוחשים על אזנו אסלאמיסטים אוטוריטריים ושלוחיהם, רובם מפוצצים בכסף וכוח - דברים שהוא כנראה מעריך מאוד. צריך להיות אדם עם הבנה בהירה מאוד של המזרח התיכון, אדם חזק שלחצים וממון לא פועלים עליו, אדם בעל חוש היסטורי עמוק - כדי לא ליפול לרשת הלחצים הזאת, ומתברר שטראמפ לא בדיוק התברך בדברים הללו. והדברים נכונים כשזוכרים את (חוסר) המחויבות שגילה הממשל לבעלי ברית אחרים באזור - הכורדים, הממשלה האפגאנית, ועכשיו גם אנחנו.

לישראל יש פחות מנופים מול ארה״ב, בהשוואה למדינות אזוריות שחולשות על שוק האנרגיה והתודעה. אייפאק והלובי הפרו ישראלי כבר לא מה שהם היו פעם, הקהילה היהודית מפוצלת ביחסה לישראל ולממשלתה ונמצאת תחת מתקפות ולחצים תמידיים - ולכן גם חווה משבר בצורך הבסיסי ביותר, שהוא עצם הקיום. גם הדור הצעיר של הנוצרים האוונגליסטיים מתחיל להרים גבה ביחסו לעם היושב בציון, לצד התחזקות של בדלנים מימין ואסלאמיסטים ומסמפטיהם משמאל.

אמנם הרכב הממשלה בישראל משפיע על הדברים האלה, אבל אלה תהליכים שקורים גם בלי קשר. ושלא יהיה לכם ספק - ברשתות MAGA כבר מתחילים לתרגם ולצטט משפיענים ישראליים שיוצאים נגד טראמפ כדי לבסס עוד נרטיב אנטישמי של "היהודים כפויי טובה" ו"מחרחרי מלחמה" מול הנשיא הדגול שלנו שעושה שלום עם הגדולה שבאויבותינו.

מה נותר לישראל לעשות? קודם כול לא לומר נואש ולא לפחד מדרך ארוכה: כבר היינו במצבים גרועים הרבה יותר, מול חרם ערבי ואו"ם עוין ואפילו נשיאים אמריקנים עוינים על-אמת. אבל המצב דורש התארגנות מחדש, כריתת בריתות אזוריות חלופיות, בנייה מחודשת של המוניטין של ישראל, ״ברית פריפריה" בן-גוריונית חדשה מול המחנה הסוני המתגבש שזוכה לתמיכה אמריקנית - וכן, כיול מחדש של הפוליטיקה הישראלית, מינויים מקצועיים ולא של מקורבים, ועבודה בשיתוף פעולה מול האתגרים הקשים - במקום מריבות והתקטננויות וחיפוש אחר "האויב שבפנים".

והכי חשוב - לנצל את הפסקת האש הכפויה כדי להתעצם ולהתכונן למערכה הבאה, להעלות דרכים יצירתיות לערער את המשטר מבפנים, ולא לשגות בקונספציות השלום או ההרתעה.

Trump, you're right. The strike on Beirut shouldn't have happened this morning. It should have happened a long time ago.

We, the citizens of Israel, are not your puppets. We didn't vote for you. You are not our prime minister.

You do not get to decide whether we respond when we are under attack. You do not get to manage the lives of millions of Israelis.

We appreciate everything you have done for the State of Israel, but it's time for you to understand that Israel is not another star on your flag.

You have become a deeply divisive figure. Israelis should not have to sit in bomb shelters waiting to hear what you say in order to know whether they can leave. The way you speak about our prime minister, and your rush to the media after every conversation between you, has earned you a great deal of contempt here.

You asked, "What the fuck is Bibi doing?" He's doing exactly what he is expected to do: protecting the people of Israel. He is not meant to serve your interests.

The surrender deal you are eager to sign with a murderous regime that has brutally oppressed its own people for 47 years and openly seeks our destruction is, in our eyes, one of the greatest disgraces imaginable. For Israel, it is a suicide pact.

Do not expect us to sit quietly while rockets and explosive drones are fired at us. Do not expect us to embrace the weakness you are displaying.

You are normalizing attacks on Israel. You are normalizing a reality in which millions of Israelis live between bomb shelters, rockets, and explosive drones.

By your actions, you are creating a dangerous equation: the IRGC and terrorist organizations are learning that they can attack Israel while Israel is expected not to respond.

There has never been a time when Israel sat and waited to see whether it would be attacked. That is not how you defeat terrorism.

That is not strength. It is surrender.

Israel has fought terrorism for generations and defeated it. We will not surrender to terror because you choose to do business with it.

We do not bribe terrorists, and we do not sell our values to accommodate them. If a terrorist organization were firing at New York and sending explosive drones into its streets, you would decide for yourself how to respond.

We have dedicated our lives to telling the world that terrorism must never pay. You chose to yield to it. Pride and ego prevent you from admitting mistakes and correcting them.

It is time for Israel to tell you no. Without apology.
