Ever wonder how people get AI to do crazy new things in their workflow?

It's all about prompt engineering

First - What are Prompts?

"Prompts are instructions that tell AI systems what to do."

They provide context and set parameters for the desired output.

For example, "Create a content calendar for a social media page"

It will create a content calendar, like you asked, but the content type will be all over the place

Lets redo it:

"Create a content calendar for an AI social media page. I want to post 3 times a day, with 1 long form a day. I want to post AI news 3 times a week and AI academic research twice a week"

Now it will give you an output closer to what you want. Even the prompt above can still be improved

Without clear prompting, AI just babbles random nonsense, effective prompts unlock its potential

This is why when people say "AI isn't useful, ChatGPT is terrible, AI doesn't understand context"...

...I laugh

They're just not skilled at prompting, but thats okay. Just like any skill it can be improved

3 Key Prompt Engineering Frameworks

Prompts have many parts working together. Like ingredients in a recipe. You wouldn't forget to salt your steak would you?

1. System Prompt

This explains the AI's persona, goals, capabilities, and restrictions.

If you wanted an AI writing assistant you could use:

"You are an expert blogger who creates funny, engaging articles on technology. Avoid anything offensive or inappropriate."

This sets the foundation.

2. Examples

Show the AI examples of what you want.

Share 2-3 samples of funny tech blogs if that's the desired output.

The AI analyzes these to learn the patterns.

3. Instructions

Give clear instructions for the task at hand.

For example:

"Write a 600 word funny blog post about the metaverse in the style of the examples."

The best part is that this simple framework works very well for beginners

Its not too difficult to use & it provides pretty decent results

Why Prompt Engineering is More Powerful Than Normal Prompts

Regular prompts just provide a basic instruction. Like "Write a funny blog post about AI."

But prompt engineering frameworks give the AI much more to work with, aligning your goals with it

👉The system prompt defines the writing style. 👉Examples show exactly what you want.
👉Instructions set clear parameters.

This layered approach leads to better results by guiding the AI with more context. Rather than hoping a generic prompt works, prompt engineering tunes the AI for results

The Basic Structure For All ChatGPT Prompts

Stop writing single sentence prompts, you're wasting your time

Every prompt needs these 4 main elements:
(🔖Bookmark to save for future references)

1. Instructions
This is the main instruction that you want the AI model to perform

2. Context
Additional data that steers the model to respond the way that you want it to

3. Input Data
Information that you want the AI model to do something with or perform some sort of action on

4. Output Indicator
Keywords used to guide the AI model into giving a specific output

Once you get these 4 down, you can get more nuanced with substructures within each basic structure
