My favourite way to shoot a sunrise - wake up in the backcountry, slip out of my sleeping bag and tent in pre-dawn light, go for a short hike, and watch the magic unfold (with a sweet snack to munch on). Yup, perfect.

Every time I ski past this creek in winter, all frosty with ice and snow, I fall in love with it. Last week, for the first time since the mid-90s, I visited it in summer, with my full-frame camera. Fell in love all over again. #canadianrockies

Glacial moraines form when glaciers bulldoze the ground creating mounds and hills of rocks and boulders. When the ice melts, these forms remain. Solid rock features show scratches and scars from a glacier grinding rocks on their surface. And then wildflowers grow.

So sad to bid farewell to the very special Abbot Pass Hut, for decades the highest permanent structure in Canada, hand-built by Swiss guides and skilled stone masons. Construction of the hut in 1922 is one of the stories I share in detail in my book, #StoriesOfIce.

During dry years - as we experienced in western Canada last summer - coniferous trees produce an abundance of cones to ensure the species’ survival. This year's abundance of pollen - creating the fascinating pattern on this partly frozen alpine lake - is for the same reasons.
