Don Revie found himself in the dock in July 1973, with the FA ready to come down hard on clubs with poor disciplinary records. #lufc were given a suspended fine (pittance anyway!) & the boss promised business as usual on the pitch, but super Leeds tamed & entertained that season!
Back to the comfort of the 70's, what could possibly go wrong?! Oh My Don, no - it was this week in 1977 that Gary Sprake's bribery allegations were leaked ahead of a planned book. #lufc were quick to act to dispel the rumours of match fixing from a decade before. It got worse...
By the time new look #lufc started pre-season in 2004, most of the heroes of European campaigns had either jumped ship or got themselves injured. In addition to the motley crew assembled by Kevin Blackwell was Leeds Youth & by eck didn't we enjoy 16 year old Simon Walton's debut!
Some noticed that I stop sharing from about the mid-noughties. There are reasons for that - mainly to avoid damaging flashbacks!
Here's one #OnThisDay 2006 - we bought then sold Doug Livermore at a loss within weeks (under Bates!) & then the Kevin Nicholls nightmare emerged... 🤯
Aside Howard Wilkinson having a clear-out at #EllandRoad & bringing in some promotion guns - in the same week #lufc had signed Vinnie Jones & John McClelland was sneaked in Mickey Thomas! An odd one that cost us £10k at a tribunal #OnThisDay 1989!
Restricted to 3 Leeds apps 🤕🤒
Missed one back in 1989 with another defender moved on by Howard Wilkinson (25th July), as David Rennie was sold to Bristol City. Using that word dependable again but not up the standard #lufc were to set. 100+ apps, 7 goals - one which we will always remember at Hillsborough...
A bit of transfer speculation #OnThisDay:
From 1998 a 'bold bid' from #lufc for Neil Lennon who duly got a better deal at Leicester... phew!
2002, Darren Anderton for Robbie Keane anyone? No, I don't recall that one! Same day, the William Gallas link which would have been nice!
The mystery of why Jack Charlton demanded a transfer away from Leeds & threatened to never kick a ball again if #lufc did not sell him may never be known (waits for somebody to say it was explained in an autobiography?)... but he was back training at #EllandRoad#OnThisDay 1960.
Surely an example of false news leaks to appease the fans? Did #lufc really try to keep Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink when there was a chance of an 8 figure sum incoming? Did he really get offered a 4 year deal?
David O'Leary wasn't fussed, he'd already started a Summer spending spree!
One #lufc player who was surplus to Howard Wilkinson's requirements & had managed to find another club was dependable & hard-working full back Neil Aspin who was sold to Port Vale on 24th July 1989.
240+ apps (6 goals) at Leeds having debuted at just 16 years old.
A #PVFC legend?
Hang on! I remember how it turned out for John Sheridan under Brian Clough but had forgotten how long the delay was before he signed for Forest, with this reported the day after an #lufc 2nd string had won at Bradford Park Avenue with him watching. Old Big 'Ead playing up again!
#lufc Transfer Klaxon... 1986!
Signed on 25th July, joining Billy Bremner's Summer (bargain) recruits, was Carlisle's former Sunderland defender, Jack Ashurst.
A surprise package, gave two solid seasons, including the FA Cup & Play-Off runs of 1987.
100+ apps, 1 goal, nice bloke!
After a seemingly long & drawn out transfer negotiation, John Charles finally returned to #lufc on 24th July 1962, despite Man City offering more to Juventus. A Turin newspaper commented on the Gentle Giant, with Juventus sad to see their star depart for Don Revie's Leeds United.
With news that the attempts to block the #lufc takeover by Caspian were thrown out of court #OnThisDay 1996, Howard Wilkinson was doubly happy having signed Nigel Martyn the day before (reports, 25th July) & a promise of more cash to spend, (bolstered by Gary Mac fee as well)...
Despite denials by #lufc & Gary McAllister himself pledging his future to the club, he joined Coventry (24th July 1996). Howard Wilkinson blamed the power struggle for #EllandRoad that was in the high court but Leeds had still just bought Lee Bowyer & were about to spend again...
Another okey-cokey #lufc transfer saga, this time back to the Tomas Skuhravy gravy train in 1994! And this is why it remains a joke with Leeds fans of a certain vintage! Bill Fotherby yet again keen to conclude on the Monday evening then set a 5pm deadline on Tuesday (#OnThisDay)
