He played a soldier who lost both legs.

The role earned him an Oscar nomination.

Then real wounded veterans started calling him “Lieutenant Dan.”

It changed his life forever.

After portraying Lt. Dan Taylor in Forrest Gump (1994), Gary Sinise became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actors.

But after 9/11, something shifted.

As thousands of Americans returned from Iraq and Afghanistan with life-changing injuries, Sinise began visiting military hospitals.

The veterans didn’t see a movie star.

They saw someone who understood, even if only through a role.

So he kept showing up.

In 2003, he formed the Lt. Dan Band, performing free concerts for troops, veterans, and military families around the world.

Then, in 2011, he launched the Gary Sinise Foundation.

While still starring on CSI: NY, he spent his days filming and his nights raising money, visiting hospitals, and supporting military families.

Eventually, the mission became his full-time work.

One program became the heart of it all:

R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment).

The goal wasn’t simply to thank wounded veterans.

It was to give them their independence back.

The foundation builds specially adapted, mortgage-free smart homes for America’s most severely wounded veterans.

Wider doorways.

Roll-in showers.

Accessible kitchens.

Voice-activated technology.

Homes designed for people whose lives were permanently changed in combat.

Each one is given to the veteran free of charge.

Since its founding, the Gary Sinise Foundation has delivered more than 100 of these custom-built homes while also providing mobility equipment, mental health support, emergency relief, and millions of meals to service members, veterans, first responders, and their families.

Sinise once said:

“We can never do enough for our nation’s defenders, but we can always do a little more.”

He could have spent the last two decades chasing bigger movie roles.

Instead, he chose hospital hallways over red carpets.

A character he played for two hours became a mission he has lived for more than twenty years.

Sometimes the greatest role a person ever plays…

isn’t on a screen.

It’s in real life.

After years of being banned from entering a stadium in my own country, for no crime other than being a woman, this is how I walked in.

This was the World Cup FIFA 2026 between England and Panama but for me, it was beyond that.

You have to be a woman from Iran or Afghanistan to truly understand this emotion.

For whom this simple act, walking into a stadium, moving with joy, showing my hair, sitting next to men, was not just forbidden. I was beaten for it. Imprisoned for it. Humiliated for it. Exiled for it. And even in exile, I became a target for multiple assassination plots.

And now people lecture me: "Don't politicize football."

I have a question: which part of my body hasn't already been politicized by the Islamic Republic? My hair? My voice? My seat in a stadium?

They turned our entire existence into a political battlefield. Every inch of a woman was a crime scene under their law.

And now I'm supposed to just sit back, eat a hot dog, and enjoy the game?

I did enjoy the game. England won. But walking through those gates, that was the real victory.

Ha! World Cup visitors are still losing it over everyday America here is another round of things that have them wide eyed and posting nonstop:

Self serve ice machines in every gas station and fast food spot. Europeans are filming themselves filling cups the size of their heads while saying this is witchcraft. One guy from Spain called it the most American invention ever.

Texas Roadhouse with the endless fresh bread and cinnamon butter. Visitors are clearing out multiple baskets before the entree even arrives. They just keep bringing more? For free? I am never leaving.

Pharmacies inside grocery stores. Walk in for milk walk out with prescriptions shampoo and a birthday card. A French fan said it felt like one building solved my entire to do list.

Massive parking lots everywhere. Stadiums malls even restaurants have seas of asphalt. People from dense cities are shocked you can actually park for free without circling for an hour.

All you can eat buffets and bottomless brunch. One Korean visitor posted from Golden Corral: I ate for three hours and they smiled at me. This country runs on abundance.

Recliner seats in movie theaters with huge screens and buttery popcorn the size of buckets. Visitors are comparing it to flying first class on the ground.

Sweet tea so sugary it makes your teeth hurt in gallons. Southern hosts keep refilling it and fans are politely pretending they can handle it while secretly vibrating.

Drive thru car washes that are basically theme park rides. Lights soap shows and your car comes out sparkling in 5 minutes. A Brazilian said even my car feels American now.

Amazon deliveries the same day or next morning. Packages just appear. One German posted a timelapse: Ordered at midnight here at 9 a.m. What is this sorcery?

Roadside attractions and random giant statues. The Worlds Largest Ball of Twine giant roadside dinosaurs or a 50 foot cowboy boot. Visitors are detouring for selfies like it is the Eiffel Tower.

Tailgating culture before games. Grills games music and strangers sharing food in parking lots. International fans are getting adopted by locals with brisket and beer.

And the random how yall doing today? small talk from cashiers Uber drivers and hotel staff. Many say they expected cold or rude instead they are getting genuine warmth and hope you enjoy the match!

At the end of the day we Americans do not always realize how much these little things stand out. We grew up with the scale the convenience and the casual friendliness so it feels normal to us. Seeing the world light up over it reminds us how lucky we are and makes us even prouder to share it with all of you.

Something good is happening at this World Cup.

The Scots turned up. The English turned up. The Norwegians turned up. They sang their songs, got stuck in, and the Americans loved them for it. Glasgow and Boston are getting twinned off the back of it.

For 30 years we’ve been told to view the US as some sort of Great Satan — all imperialism and orange-man clichés. Not everyone buys it of course, but enough do.

And then Europeans actually go, and find a place that feels familiar. Makes sense to them. A bit richer, a bit further ahead, but recognisably ours. Settled by Europeans, still deeply European in its bones.

There’s a gathering-of-the-clans feeling to it. Old neighbours discovering they still like the same songs, the same drink, the same daft humour, and genuinely enjoying each other’s company.

None of it’s a surprise, really. It’s just been buried under so much politics that we forgot we were allowed to enjoy it.

Good to be reminded.
