Dali's painting on the left let me to the sketch by St John of the Cross. Why does that perspective seem so significant? It evokes a feeling of seeing an idea in a new way. Is it a bird's eye view? Is it the soul departing and looking back?
Loss, vertigo and sad beauty.
Aaand I've just learned that the developer behind this just didn't just nuke Photoshop - he has done open-
source clean room reimplementations of the entire Adobe suite.
Holy shit.
I bought this as a graduation gift to myself back in the 90s - the nib is trashed and I called Parker to see about replacement. Got a very helpful (probably) human on the line with a very precise British inflected Chinese accent. She was typing as she spoke and I heard the distinctive thump of an IBM selectric type of word processor…

@JaniceDean i knew this from trying to make pie from pumpkin- does not taste great
maybe it is certain varieties of pumpkin but the squash tastes much better in pie
"I'm afraid of AI"
"what's your (p)doom?"
"what if machines take over?"
"what if we all become dependent on machines?"
"what if I need a machine just to talk to my soul mate?"
"how am I supposed to get a job if machines are doing all the jobs?"
"Grok, how do I meet other people?"
@AndrewZywiecMD great response and as close to a nuanced, real assessment as i have seen in a while.
not to sound like the idiot in the buddhist parable of the burning house, but what will this war look like? what is the field on which it is waged?
A word, gentlemen.
I get it.
You're pissed that your time has passed. Yeah, you're still fitter than most of the soft slob dads you see at Publix. You're better armed than the local PD. So if North Korea ever decided for some reason to invade your little nowhere neighborhood, you're ready.
But the truth is next time the balloon really does go up, Colonel Trautman isn't going to ask you to come back one last time. He has droves of 19 year olds with more balls than brains coming through Basic all the time. And some of them will pass Selection. And they'll be kicking the doors. Not you.
Accepting it can be hard. Every time you're around those young bucks, you never fail to hear one whispering "Hey, that's him. He was with the 69th Thundercocks back in Iraq. Bro stacked bodies."
But, you never manage to hear his buddy reply "Fuck, he got old."
So you stew. All that anger at what we all see happening all the time and nowhere to put it. No target. No objective. No mission.
No enemy.
So you look for enemies. People to blame. People to denounce.
People to hate.
And you give voice to that hate online. Because there are loads of others, listless and angry, looking for the same thing you are. An enemy. So they can trick themselves into thinking spewing vitriol on the Internet is "doing something". Like you did. You're "taking action". You're "waking people up".
You're being a "leader".
But, at the end of the day, once you strip away all the parts that are utterly meaningless, all that's left is the hate.
Time is short. Trust me on that. One day you will realize you're closer to the exit than the onramp. And you will think about the legacy you're leaving. And about the Judgement we all must someday face.
Will God have you in the book as a warrior? A teacher? A builder of a family? A good example for those who come next?
Or that you squandered your life on hate?
I worry about this, because my time grows short. And because I'm as guilty as anyone else of allowing myself to wallow in anger and hate when I should have been building and uplifting.
I hope I can get right with God. I hope you can, too. You have time.
Don't waste it.
This is The "King of the Hill" race at Hudson Speedway in New Hampshire.
A thrilling and action-packed event from start to finish, the drivers competed to claim the "King of the Hill" title with the challenge of parking onto a moving trailer.@ChrisLoesch
True but the critical use of it is to distinguish the satanic from the divine
A hallmark card concept of discernment (which i am in no way connecting to your post) is Robert Frost’s “2 paths diverged in the woods” as displayed on kitch signs.
The choice made all the difference but what is lost is that in the poem it is economically clear that the voice of the narrator knows nothing about the other path and in fact doesn’t even know if it is less traveled…
Great irony in the poem that is lost. Like a reverse Monty Hall scenario where the game show host has no idea what is behind door 2 but we assume he does…
maybe TMI but 2yrs back I went out to Bend,OR and did one of those facilitated retreats with about 5 grams of psilocybin. Understood something that has been very useful. My discernment was shit and i could not tell if the default narrative spinning on the hamster wheel was good or harmful.
Prayer, meditation and careful observation of the messages coming in and going out are not fixed skills. Like with BJJ if you stay off the mats for a year you will lose it
Maybe we mean different things for discernment… and i have no interest in quarreling over it. I liked how your original post mentioned it. I don’t see that term often
Discernment is a key trait that is hard to define or quantify- “ethical pattern recognition?”
It comes up in Catholic prayer, my son’s Jesuit high school mentions it as a goal of graduation but like many things from that tradition of more orthodox christian or catholic practice, has been thrown out with the bath water
In a very different context- the skill of a really good EMT or paramedic is understanding and perceiving real emergencies from bad, painful, scary situations which are not going to kill you right away. Not as easy as it sounds.
I feel like we need to not lose discernment. But refind it and hold on to it and cultivate it in each other.
We often don’t know if we are dealing with the actual satanic or just silliness
It will all work out for you in the end
You might lose discernment
You might not know when to push, or when to rest
You might be confused, dazed, existing within a haze
But underneath the chaos
You can subtly feel what is familiar to you
That you designed all of it to unfold exactly like it’s working
Right now
There is magic in every step you take
There is a wind that pushes you forward, even when you fall
There is a perpetual strength that loves when you call to summon it
And there is the strength of God within you
It will all work out for you in the end
You might lose discernment
You might not know when to push, or when to rest
You might be confused, dazed, existing within a haze
But underneath the chaos
You can subtly feel what is familiar to you
That you designed all of it to unfold exactly like it’s working
Right now
There is magic in every step you take
There is a wind that pushes you forward, even when you fall
There is a perpetual strength that loves when you call to summon it
And there is the strength of God within you
