Legacy of Oppression Persists: Zambia’s Public Order Act, a Stain on 59 Years of Independence

Tomorrow 24th October 2023, we celebrate 59 years since Zambia broke free from the chains of British colonial rule. But have we truly gained independence when the oppressive Public Order Act still restricts our basic freedoms?

This archaic and draconian law allows the government to trample on citizens' rights to free speech, association, and assembly. It grants unchecked powers to ban meetings and protests at will. Our colonial masters used the Public Order Act to ruthlessly crush dissent. Yet decades after independence, it remains entrenched in our law books.

As we celebrate independence day, we must ask ourselves - have we simply replaced white masters with black ones? The Public Order Act has no place in a modern democracy. It belongs in the colonial era.

As we celebrate our nation's progress, let us reaffirm our commitment to achieving true freedom - not just from British rule - but from laws designed to control and subjugate. Only when we can speak and assemble freely have we realized the promise of independence. The time has come to break the final shackles of oppression. 59 years later, Zambia's liberation remains unfinished.
