One year since Awdah Hathaleen was killed.

On July 28, 2025, he was shot dead in his village of Umm al-Khair, in the South Hebron Hills of the West Bank, during an attack by Yinon Levy, an internationally sanctioned violent settler who has terrorised Palestinians across the area for years, advancing an agenda that enjoys the backing of the IDF and Israel’s political establishment.

Awdah was a loving father, a devoted teacher, a courageous activist, and a deeply compassionate human being.

To many of us who are active in the South Hebron Hills, he was not only a dear friend but also an enduring source of inspiration. Under a system defined by permanent violence, segregation, and repression, Awdah remained a steadfast defender of peace, tolerance, and freedom. For Awdah, a better future for all the people between the river and the sea was not an empty slogan, but a moral imperative by which he lived his life every day.

Umm al-Khair, Awdah’s home village, has been the target of continuous settler and State violence for decades now. It is one of many villages in Area C of the West Bank that is not recognised by the State of Israel, and thus almost every building, chicken coop, water well and even bathroom there is under the imminent threat of demolition.

The incident in which Awdah was killed was when settlers began building a road to connect the newly built outpost inside the village, on Umm al-Khair’s private land. Just days after Awdah was killed, Levy, who was released almost immediately, was back at the scene of the crime and continued working on the illegal construction of the new outpost.

The circumstances around Awdah's death are horrifying but unfortunately not unique. Since October 2023, settler violence has escalated to levels we have not seen before. This is not “fringe” extremism but a coordinated campaign of ethnic cleansing, enjoying political, financial, military, and judicial backing.

Awdah’s death, one among those of more than 1,100 Palestinians killed in the West Bank since October 2023, is an irreversible loss to humanity.

The UN said Israeli settlers have carried out more than 1,330 attacks in the occupied West Bank since the start of 2026, causing casualties and damage to Palestinian property.

The UN humanitarian affairs office (OCHA) said in a statement on Monday that it was deeply concerned “over the escalating violence across the West Bank in recent days.”

Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative, warned of the seriousness of statements made by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz, who threatened to repeat the crime of ethnic cleansing carried out in the Jenin and Tulkarm refugee camps in other camps across the occupied West Bank. He said these threats coincide with plans to intensify attacks by Israeli terrorist settlers and the Israeli military throughout the West Bank.

Barghouti said that towns, villages, and refugee camps across the West Bank have effectively become prisons, surrounded by 1,300 military checkpoints and more than 225 military gates, while Israeli settlers, under the protection of the Israeli military, continue to burn homes, mosques, and vehicles, uproot trees, and open fire on unarmed Palestinian civilians. Roads are becoming unsafe for Palestinians whose vehicles are frequently stoned by the settlers.
He added that these actions have been accompanied by an arrest campaign targeting 3,600 Palestinians since the latest escalation began, as well as the establishment of 11 new settlement outposts in the West Bank over the course of four days, adding to what he said are 500 existing settlements and outposts that are illega according to international law.

Israeli War Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to prepare to seize another Palestinian refugee camp in the occupied West Bank while expanding offensive operations across the territory, according to Israel's Ynet.

The directive follows months-long military assaults in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nour Shams, where tens of thousands of Palestinians have been displaced, and comes days after the deadly events in Tel, southwest of Nablus, where four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed during a terror attack by armed Israeli settlers.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir also called for harsher collective punishment against Palestinians, saying that "for every Jew who is murdered, the enemy must absorb the loss of lands and homes," and urging that Palestinian towns be treated like Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza.

On the ground, Israeli occupation forces demolished three Palestinian homes, including one in Shuqba, west of Ramallah, and two in Deir Razih, east of Dura in the Hebron governorate. The New Arab reported, citing local officials, that around 90 homes in Shuqba have received demolition or stop-work orders. Meanwhile, Jewish settlers assaulted Palestinians in several areas, including Al-Minya near Bethlehem and Khillet al-Hummus south of Yatta.

Occupation forces also carried out widespread raids and arrests across the occupied West Bank, detaining Palestinians in Tulkarem, Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, Qalqilya, and Bethlehem.

Israel is demolishing the family home of a Palestinian man its forces executed in cold blood on Friday after he defended himself against an armed settler who pointed a gun at him.
