A very helpful description of the factors involved with a Ss’ ability to comprehend. Worth sharing with teachers currently trying to make teacher judgements about Ss learning 👇🏼🗣️
Thanks for jumping in, Chris. Agree with all the above. ORF has a strong relationship with comprehension - if students can read accurately at a good rate they are more able to focus on meaning, and if they also read with expression they are demonstrating to some extent that they understand it. So ORF is a start but not the whole story. There is some research on cloze/maze for primary students but that is also imperfect and, as Chris says, question-based comprehension assessments are not very precise. Comprehension involves many interrelated skills and different assessments tend to pick up different elements (and all are confounded by background knowledge). So given that teachers need to assess irrespective of the difficulties with reliability, I tend to suggest some combination of ORF with bespoke teacher-developed assessment on a regular basis and perhaps an annual standardised assessment for growth monitoring, with all the associated caveats.
