FROM ENGINEER TO BILLION-RAND BUSINESSMAN: WHO IS SANDILE ZUNGU?

Long before his name became closely associated with AmaZulu FC and South African football, Sandile Zungu was building his career in business.

Born in 1967, Zungu studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, graduating with a BSc in 1988, before later obtaining an MBA.

In 2002, he founded Zungu Investments Company (Zico), an investment holding company that would go on to build a diverse portfolio across some of South Africa’s biggest industries.

⛏️ MINING & ENERGY
Zungu has built significant interests in the mining and energy sectors, including a reported 25% stake in Seriti Resources, one of South Africa’s major coal producers and an important supplier to Eskom.

His investment interests have also extended to Kelvin Power Station, highlighting his focus on strategic assets within South Africa’s energy economy.

💰 A DIVERSIFIED BUSINESS PORTFOLIO
His business interests have stretched well beyond mining.

Over the years, Zungu has been associated with investments involving major companies and assets including Unilever, Takealot, Gold One and Lanseria Airport.

He has therefore positioned himself not simply as a businessman in one sector, but as an investor with interests across multiple parts of the South African economy.

🎟️ THE NATIONAL LOTTERY
Zungu has also become associated with Sizekhaya Holdings, the consortium that was awarded a South African National Lottery licence in 2025 another major development in his growing business portfolio.

⚽️ THEN CAME AMAZULU
In 2020, Zungu entered South African football in a major way when he acquired 100% ownership of AmaZulu FC.

Under his ownership, he has become one of the most prominent club bosses in the PSL and has increasingly positioned himself as a voice on issues affecting the administration and future of South African football.

And now, his name is being mentioned in the biggest football boardroom of them all:

🇿🇦 SAFA.

With the South African Football Association facing continued questions around leadership, administration, development and the performance of our national teams, the debate is whether someone with Zungu’s corporate background could bring a different approach to the organisation.

He has experience in:

• Building an investment company
• Managing major business interests
• Mining and energy
• Strategic investments
• Owning and running a PSL football club
• Navigating complex corporate environments
But running a football association is a completely different challenge.
Does being a successful businessman automatically make someone the right person to run SAFA?
Or does South African football require a leader with deeper experience in football administration, grassroots development and the structures of the game?
One thing is certain: Sandile Zungu is no stranger to big boardrooms.
