An illegal alien crosses our border, gives birth thirty minutes later, and walks away with an automatic American citizen. This is the system we currently allow. It is broken, and it is being exploited on a massive scale.

Every year, 250,000 to 320,000 babies are born on U.S. soil to illegal immigrant mothers. Every single one instantly qualifies for federal benefits. Every single one becomes a potential anchor, giving illegal parents a pathway to stay in this country indefinitely. The price tag to American taxpayers: $150.6 billion a year, and rising.

The 14th Amendment was written after the Civil War for freed slaves. It was never intended to reward people for breaking our immigration laws or to turn the maternity ward of hospitals into a shortcut around the legal immigration process.

We introduced a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship for children of illegal aliens and shut this loophole down permanently. American citizenship means something, and it should never be handed out as a byproduct of breaking the law.
