Look at the sequence of decisions. In January Mark Carney travelled to Beijing and opened the door to tens of thousands of Chinese electric vehicles at a preferential tariff rate. Four days later he stood up in Davos and delivered a speech that the American progressive side celebrated.

This summer he brought an American Democrat operative with Clinton and Bloomberg experience into the Prime Minister’s Office as its first Chief Operating Officer, the same person advising on Canada-United States relations. He has held private meetings with Josh Shapiro and Pete Buttigieg, the names already being floated for 2028.

Meanwhile the tariffs keep arriving. More categories. Higher rates. Effective dates that hit this summer and into the fall.

The United States is trying to rebuild its manufacturing base and restore middle-class jobs by bringing production back to its own states. Canada is doing the opposite. We are signing agreements that invite subsidized Chinese EVs into our market while our own factories and parts suppliers face growing uncertainty.

This is not a new strategy. Previous Liberal governments treated Donald Trump like a temporary inconvenience that would simply disappear if they ignored him long enough and kept cozying up to the Democrats. That brilliant plan delivered open contempt from the Trump White House and left Canadian workers holding the bag. The same bet is being placed again. Collect the applause from the American left today. Cross your fingers that the next Democrat will feel generous tomorrow. The factories and the exporters live in the present. The tariffs are not waiting for anyone’s primary calendar.

Is this how a country that sends three-quarters of its exports to the United States is supposed to manage the relationship?

@Mitchell_AB Wab Kinew should spend less time worrying about Alberta and more time trying to increase the fiscal capacity of Manitoba so it doesn’t remain a “Have Not” province forever but it you like alcoholic politicians who abuse their spouse & beat up cab drivers, that would be up to you.

What’s next, do I have to consult with Indigenous groups to be able cut my lawn? Get a hair cut? Have lunch? Where does this end?

Fair enough, now let’s calculate constitutionally enshrined equalization where Albertans have contributed a net amount of more than $700 billion in the last 65 yrs
