On 2 September 2026, the Madras High Court set aside the State-wide ban on temples/private individuals acquiring elephants, while existing statutory safeguards remained applicable.

Soon after, five elephants from Assam - Durga (5), Shiva (6), Hiralal (8), Rupsing (13) & Bijuli (5), were cleared for transfer to Tamil Nadu. Durga has already travelled nearly 3,000 km to Madurai.

𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐂𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄. 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍. 𝐇𝐔𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘. 𝐄𝐌𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐇𝐘.

Elephants are supremely intelligent, deeply emotional and profoundly social beings. They form lifelong bonds. They grieve. They comfort. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫.

And here lies the most heartbreaking paradox: Durga has been brought into a temple where the elephant-headed 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐆𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐞. How can we bow before Lord Ganesha while denying His living embodiment the very things we cherish for ourselves—𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲, 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐨𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐁𝐄?

💔𝐃𝐮𝐫��𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩. 𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧.

🙏🐘If our devotion cannot protect a frightened five-year-old elephant, then we must ask ourselves: what does devotion truly mean?

And we don’t have any comments from either governments or the authorities selling and buying the animals. Humans make the rules, humans domesticate these sentient beings.
