Our eternal destiny relies on one main factor, the character of our hearts. Will we put God first? Will we choose Him?
James talks about having to choose between God and the world. “You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.” James 4:4.
God wants us to choose Him. If the desires of our hearts revolve around self, it will display through our actions. Pride is a constant battle and an egoistic matter. In James 4:6 it says “But he gives us more grace. That is why the scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'""
In order for us to really grasp God's word, we have to humble ourselves and come before Him. Christ's reproofs and judgments won't penetrate if we don't humble ourselves. Pride in our character places us in a mentality where we believe we are superior. None of our best actions and achievements could come close to God's character. Submit, and He will free you.

The mind cannot be refreshed, enlivened, and elevated by being confined nearly all the Sabbath hours within walls, listening to long sermons and tedious, formal prayers. The Sabbath of the Lord is put to a wrong use if thus celebrated. The object for which it was instituted is not attained. The Sabbath was made for man, to be a blessing to him by calling his mind from secular labor to contemplate the goodness and glory of God. It is necessary that the people of God assemble to talk of Him, to interchange thoughts and ideas in regard to the truths contained in His word, and to devote a portion of time to appropriate prayer.
