@MrRoughton To intro new parts of the world, I use a quick video as a kidnapped agent sending an SOS w/ clues. The kids are FBI agents and use their "Freedom-Pads" to research the clues. I put on a fake beard and become Gen. Cooper. We spend the day acting and learn where countries are.

@arellano_512 @gimkit I feel you. I know they're a business and they do deserve to earn a living from their work, but I wish they implemented the PRO model in a different way (like they did before by offering only 5 Kits with Basic). Now without PRO, Gimkit is unusable.

@danklumper @SurthrivEDU @VictoriaTheTech Definitely not. However, our goal should always be what the student needs, not how to be better than our peers. I believe that is the criticism @SurthrivEDU was making about TLAP. I believe the majority of TLAP is good, but I can see where he's coming from.

@VictoriaTheTech As an alternative I enjoyed "Teach Like Finland". A decent chunk isn't possible to replicate in many US schools, but it does include some good ideas and examples of what can be done to improve school culture and is totally focused on students first.

@SurthrivEDU @VictoriaTheTech You know, that explains the undercurrent I felt while reading it. There are tons of good ideas and the push for passion and enthusiasm is truly great, but there is a bit of a feeling of "I'm better than my boring coworkers" throughout the book.

@VictoriaTheTech I totally empathize with your thoughts. I read Teach Like A Pirate, like it, but I won't be utilizing everything in it. Some pieces of pedagogy in it won't work for everyone, but that's the point. We keep reading books, take what works for our kids, and keep improving.

@mmorten @biggestjoel Exactly! Then he used any possible thing to back up his claims. He was also on a cocktail of dangerous drugs, so nothing he specifically did can really be attributed to any philosophy on a whole, except for those that he himself created (like Nazism).

Today I learned...

The white man in this photo was Peter Norman from Australia who finished 2nd the 1968 200m final. Norman stood in solidarity with the American Black athletes. It was Norman who suggested, when discovered they only had 1 pair of gloves, to each wear one. (cont)

We can't start a dialogue without listening to what other people are thinking. Real work can't begin until we acknowledge each other's world views, even if they aren't the same.

It does us no good as teachers to dole out punishment, we need to listen and help guide our Ls to alternative behaviors. Out nation needs to listen to the needs of it's angry, oppressed, & hurt citizens. Then, as a nation we can guide ourselves to an alternative and better future

For educators, this is similar to us trying to solve a problem with a learners behavior. Their view of their behavior will be different from our view. They might be suffering at home, there may be stress, realizing uncomfortable truths about their bodies, etc... (2/3)

@MsSakennia I'd really appreciate seeing this when you can share it. I work in a mostly white area that often forgets racism exists. This propels a false understanding of racism in our nation and many parents/kids struggle to understand reality vs their perception.

In this period of turmoil in our world remember that out Learners model themselves after us. It is important that our Ls understand that for all lives to matter #BlackLivesMatter There is nothing political about wanting all our Ls to have equal rights and the best possible future
