When people hear that The Writing Revolution encourages a structured way of teaching writing, they sometimes worry it will limit students’ creativity. In practice, we see the opposite effect.
The Hochman Method gives students the tools they need to get their ideas onto the page. When students understand how sentences and paragraphs work, they spend less time struggling with where to start and more time focusing on what they want to say.
It is similar to other disciplines we teach. Musicians practice scales. Artists learn techniques. Those foundations make creativity possible.
Structured writing instruction does not box students in. It helps students communicate their thinking clearly, so their ideas and their voices can shine. ✏️📚

✏️ 'The pencil is the most powerful tool in the classroom' captures the essence of The Writing Revolution's Hochman Method. This philosophy emphasizes that the physical act of writing—not just typing or speaking—activates unique cognitive processes that deepen learning across all subjects. When students write by hand, they engage in deliberate thinking, make connections between ideas, and process content more thoroughly. The Hochman Method leverages this power through structured writing activities that simultaneously develop writing skills while enhancing content knowledge. It's not just about becoming better writers—it's about becoming better thinkers and learners through the simple yet profound act of putting pencil to paper. #writingrevolution #teaching #writinginstruction #K12Teachers #HochmanMethod #WritingToLearn

"Teachers often note that they have never been taught how to teach writing, but merely to assign it. According to one survey, 71 percent of high school teachers reported receiving minimal to no preparation to teach writing. The Hochman Method offers teachers a road map: a clear, coherent, evidence-based method to improve student writing."

How do you get your early elementary students intentionally retrieving what they've learned? You’ve probably heard of a brain dump, but in Stephane Singleton Bolton's 1st grade classroom, she’s given it an upgrade: The Brain Boost!
We know retrieval practice works, but without spacing, it’s not enough. The Leitner System is a low-maintenance way to make spaced practice automatic. Low effort for teachers, high ownership for students. Here’s how I use it to help my students make knowledge durable.👇🔗

This is a powerful study!
Also: low-SES students benefited most from extra social studies & high-SES did NOT benefit--suggesting social studies provides the academic knowledge measured by reading tests. High-SES kids are more likely to pick up that kind of knowledge at home.
When Ss can put names to the SEL skills they're learning, they can use them more intentionally!
