If you give kids a chance to redo assignments for full credit so that they can show their learning growth, they will jump at that chance every time. When we limit them to minor grade improvements they just aren’t as motivated to keep trying & never show their full potential.

@totalstemteach Grades reflect mastery, not behavioral compliance. If you want to change the behavior of turning work in late or not at all, you need a behavioral consequence. Grade consequences inevitably say that students haven’t mastered content, but really they haven’t mastered behavior.

@rehberclass @JoyKirr Definitely understand that. It seems districts have taken a very differing stance on this. Hopefully we will get direction on best practices from states if this has to continue this fall.

@JoyKirr Definitely. I upload them to classroom for my seniors with unreliable internet and they are so grateful to see the class discussions so they can do their work, so I’m happy for that reason. But after they are uploaded I delete them.

Teach my kids how to ask for extensions, how to own their mistakes honestly, how to disagree respectfully and how to advocate for themselves because those are the real world lessons they need from me. And I can do it all in grace. (4/4)

When did we as educators decide it was our job to teach kids how tough the real world is? I see it constantly said that we can’t give grace or extensions or breaks because that’s not what life is like, but they aren’t in the real world, they are in our classrooms. Can’t we (1/4)

Missing work. The answer? 100% yes. Why? Because she already deals with the real world at home. My classroom can be an escape instead of another struggle. And this applies when normal school days are happening too. I’m not the real world enforcer and I refuse to be. I will (3/4)

@kellerhistory @joshogilvie4 @MonteSyrie No, though I am sorry it came off that way. I teach English and see other subjects assign writing work with little to no guidance daily so I worry that they will always be disappointed since the kids simply don’t know what to do.

I would ask how this sets them up for success when they have no guidance throughout the process and then no grace when they fail at managing their time well. They are kids. Even my seniors need guidance to learn time management and pacing for projects.

@SpanisHarterMS @MonteSyrie I think that learning to ask for extensions and reach out on your own behalf is a major life skill in responsibility. I can change a due date on a bill, adjust deadlines and ask for help in the real world. Why do Ts choose to take on the task of teaching Ss how hard life is?

@MonteSyrie I had to identify the purpose in my assignments. It’s not completion & so it doesn’t upset me when they ask for help last minute since the due date doesn’t matter as much as the work they do so we can work on their growth individually. I also don’t believe in late grades so 🤷🏼‍♀️
