@theashleyray@jewstein3000 π€£ Do you hear yourself? You have no idea what these therapist have said it not said, yet you confidently comment on it, and accuse someone else of being crazy?
@velvethollywood I think maybe you've replied in wrong place. But person-centred has nothing to do with self disclosure. Rogers was extremely skilled at reflecting, paraphrasing and clarifying. Not adding his own experiences.
Replies on this are terrifying. The number of people that think it's normal for therapists to talk about themselves. π€¦πΌββοΈ What's happening to this industry.
Just tried my seventh therapist. During the 15 minute consult, I told her I was looking for someone who didn't make the session about themselves. She promised she would never do that.
First session, she's offended when I ask her not to talk about herself. I had to report this.
@In2sportz7 Sorry that's been your experience. And partially why I've pushed back so hard on this tweet. There is a lot of bad therapy out there, but the good kind can be life-changing
@kiwikiller5000@Theia_Idcb@jewstein3000 It sounds like most of what you do is NOT Self-disclosing, it's just validating. This point though feels concerning, people seeking specific therapists with same 'identity' feels like big potential for collusion, which I think is what a lot of people are looking for these days.
@TheGledge@getherouttahere Doubt this is true, but even so, it's inappropriate. What if the client hated it there? They now feel judged. They have undisclosed fertility issues? They've had a child bereavement? There is a reason for no self-disclosure. It's not difficult!
@kiwikiller5000@Theia_Idcb@jewstein3000 I'm not having a go at you, but this tweet seems to be exposing a lot of really unethical practices, which are super concerning. It's no wonder we have an international mental health crisis if therapist are just talking about their own shit all the time!
@kiwikiller5000@Theia_Idcb@jewstein3000 Sounds like a shortcut to feeling 'connected'. Relationships take time to form, that's life. Sitting in the discomfort of that is therapy. yes, if a client asks your modality or training, sure. Life experience? Na.
@Theia_Idcb@jewstein3000 A therapist that seriously thinks talking about their own cat is genuinely therapeutic needs to seek immediate supervision π€¦πΌββοΈ
@QuietStorm90x Why does that sound dramatic to you? Do you think deep apprehension to the idea The Therapist is infallible so it must be the client is misplaced? Are therapists meant to exert their world view on clients and clients blandly accept them? Seems a terrifying situ to me. π€·πΌββοΈ
@JayceLong Largely agree but don't think 'rapport-building disclosure' is in same category as the rest. Clients don't want to know. They need to feel free to bring what they want without 'oh, that might upset therapist because...'.
@PulOutNWalkAwaY@jewstein3000 π³ You are putting it on the client that the therapist can't connect to people without self-disclosure?? Good luck on your mental health journey if these are the 'professionals' supporting you.
