An interesting thread highlighting the problems of universal healthcare. No system is perfect. Canada experiences many of the same issues we do, but perhaps for different reasons.
Let’s talk about why emergency departments are full.
We’re going to use Mary as an example. Mary is a completely fictional patient.
Let’s say Mary is 72. Her family doctor retired 5 years ago.
She’s in the ED after a fall “weak and dizzy” (we see this a lot.)
@JimIrsay#fortheshoe my 13 year old daughter and her best friend would love to attend! Her best friend is a huge Swiftie, but getting tickets has been impossible. I would love for them to experience Lucas Oil and see Swift for their 1st concert at the same time!
Our kids are watching.
The shooter that attempted to assassinate President Trump yesterday was only 20 years old. His whole life was lived in a world of social media savagery, polarizing partisanship, and a 24/7 ‘news cycle’ that is built around a chosen narrative.
That’s how this happens.
Our kids are watching what we do, say, post, and observing our interactions with those with which we disagree. We have got to let them know that this is wholly unacceptable. This isn’t the way we disagree with someone.
We can have opinions. We can have drastically differing opinions. We can’t be raising a generation of children that think the behavior we’ve seen over the last 10-20 years and an assassination attempt are okay.
We’ve got to do better. Our kids are watching.
We have to be better than the example that’s been evident for the last several years. If that means unfollowing the highly partisan page or friend, do it. If it means not sharing that meme because it’s too divisive, refrain.
We’ve got to tone down the rhetoric, stop engaging in discussion as if it’s only black and white, leaving no room for the bits of gray that certainly exist.
We have to teach kids how to talk, how to use a spoon, and even how to disagree with someone.
We’re going to stand up for the women of America.
We’re going to protect contraception and IVF.
And we are going to restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land.
There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery.
