walking or jogging reduce depression about as much as therapy and have a much larger effect than SSRIs
the largest effect in the entire analysis was from dancing
Just asked Victor Wembanyama if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting company.
“Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. …Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”
Any one who is privileged therefore owes it to the world to work on the most obnoxiously hard problems, not just build a life for themselves, but uplift people by building great companies and employing as many people as they can.
The privileged must risk it all, over and over again, until they are tortured to greatness.
This is my version of socialism, re- distribute risk. The rich have a moral imperative to embrace more risk.
people sometimes date by presenting the most broadly palatable version of themselves. i feel the better strategy is the opposite, as in be as odd and honest as possible, as early as possible
the goal isn’t to have 100 mid first dates. it’s to help the wrong people lose interest faster, and the right person recognise your highly specific signal
Just be hot! Tbf. I talk about hotness as a state of being. Confident. Funny. Ambitious. Charismatic. Kind. Intelligent. Interesting. Interested!! Having a hobby. Starting the business. Going out on a limb. Making moves. Making things happen. Trying really freaking hard! Learning something. Having a great freaking attitude. Being optimistic. Making them sick with your enthusiasm. Being an active participant in your life. Loving your life. All pillars of hotness in my book. I also think people are generally very handsome and very beautiful and if you’re not feeling that way, that’s usually a case for internal work. The external reflects the internal. True “beauty” shines from the inside out, as much as they try to tell you it doesn’t. It does. And nothing you wear is going to fix that.
“while it’s not doing well statistically, everyone seems more alive”
i find the long-running stereotype that europeans, despite weaker economies, somehow 'know how to live' endlessly interesting. meanwhile the US is extraordinarily good at making the economy run, but seems to sometimes lose sight of what it is for
ambition and leisure are often presented as opposites, yet every so often you meet someone who is wildly driven and also deeply alive, and the tradeoff starts to feel less inevitable
a few things i notice and appreciate in the european, especially italian, way of life:
>slowness as a refusal to make every moment instrumental. meals take time and conversations wander
>appreciation for smaller pleasures. coffee in a proper cup, fruit at its peak, an evening aperitivo, sitting in a square, a skill for finding richness in ordinary rather than requiring constant novelty
>attention and care for beauty. buildings, clothes, food, shopfronts, public spaces, even small rituals carry the sense that aesthetics are part of life itself, rather than an optional extra once the useful work is done
because ofc what we measure shapes what we optimise for, i keep wondering whether we’re measuring enough of what actually makes a life feel alive
one thing i struggle with as an online writer is that the economics of the internet often punish deep idea incubation. monthly subscriptions and algorithms reward a frequent stream of output, while the best thinking often needs long stretches of unpressured time to brew
from my favourite writers, i’d honestly be happy to receive one extraordinary essay a year. there’s already more than enough noise to keep up with. i’d rather read something they’ve thought through deeply, and trust them to find the cadence the work requires
I have found the act of deliberately making myself hotter to be a wonderful part of adulthood
it’s not just about how you LOOK, but about tending to a life that makes you feel confident, delightful, at ease
in adulthood, you get to exercise TASTE - being *intentional* with finding clothes that make *you* feel good. finding a dress that makes me want to twirl or jewelry I could see myself wearing every day.
to create a home that I genuinely want to live in. tending to a space that gives me energy and makes me feel at peace. adding the quirky object that makes me smile everytime i walk by.
to fuel my body with nourishing foods. to move my body in ways that create more energy for it. to find workouts that I want to stick with and ways of integrating movement into my every day routines.
to find people that make me feel alive. that make me laugh. that bring out the best version of myself.
hotness is in your energy.
in your love for life.
in the comfort you have in your own body.
let's all get hotter every year!!!
I think the healthiest form of ambition is simply curiosity about your own potential.
How good could I get at this? How far could I take it? What would happen if I gave this everything I had for five years?
A lot of people kill that curiosity before they ever get an answer. They decide what's realistic based on their environment, their age, their circumstances, or what other people have managed to accomplish.
Ambition is just refusing to decide your limits before you've actually reached them.
😭 I know this is all jokes but at the core of it this is what showing up and showing out for ppl you care about looks like when you want to deepen friendships. did you show up at my launch party? call or check in to ask about me? actually made time to see me?
In 2021, The Simpsons' most reclusive writer from its golden era did an interview and in the middle of it, he gave one of the best writing tips I've ever heard. Like it's legitimately something I still think about and utilize all these years later.
