Today, a new era begins!
Or maybe it began a while ago and now the name Wise reflects the reality – that it's not just transfers that we are fixing.

Slow financial rails are creating useless products and wasting our time in “innovation”. With the #GMEstock dust settled, here are some thoughts on how our archaic financial infrastructure is becoming an impediment to innovation and simply put - slowing us down! (1/18)
Dear UK merchants,
When prices are jacked up by 5x, you should look for an alternative. Open Banking as a solution already exists. Time to start using it.

It all started in 2009, when people around the world were still blissfully sending money abroad with their banks.
Two of these blissful people were @kaarmann and @taavet. But they were soon to realise that ignorance wasn't bliss. It was actually very expensive.
The first steps towards true Open Banking have now been made. The grass is green and the sun is shining.
But make no mistake – on the journey from Bag End to Mordor, we've only just left the Shire.

🇭🇺 Similar to our @bankofengland direct integration, we've gone live with the Hungarian central bank @MNB_Hungary this week.
Fun to see our customers puzzled, how it's possible their money arrives from UK to HU in 4 seconds.
Psst, it will also be cheaper

🧐Who would have thought that our startup will have an ISO certification?!
🔐Congrats to the security team @secwaza & co for bringing the ISO 27001 home.

1/ @TransferWise Mission Update Q4
When we started 9 years ago in my kitchen, I couldn’t fathom how much progress we could make with 2000 people.
Now I can share a glimpse of the impact we’ve had in Oct-Dec for our 6 million users.
🇧🇼 Welcome Botswana to the TransferWise network. BWP is the 56th currency live.
Fun fact: the currency is called "pula", which means rain in the local Setswana language. 🦏
Oh boy, what a way to start the decade! I just had the honour to give my first real class at the @UniofOxford about my favourite topic – building products at @TransferWise!
Thank you Professor Vulkan for the opportunity! It has been an incredible experience.
@mrtcropper @TransferWise Aha! You have one of those IBANs that starts with DE?
You can get yourself a new BE IBAN, which does support Direct Debits, but you'd need to close the EUR account and reopen it. Then it should work.
It would mean that the current DE IBAN will not work anymore though.
@mrtcropper @TransferWise Unless Ireland has their own special system, I bet they use SEPA Direct Debits – which TransferWise now also supports!
All you need is to open EUR account details with TransferWise and use them with an Irish merchant.
That's it.
Try it out and let us know how it went :)
@frackattack@TransferWise While the IBAN is indeed Belgian (starts with BE), it can actually be used across the Eurozone – in every country that supports SEPA Direct Debits. In fact, the BE IBANs have already been successfully used in Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Austria and the Netherlands.
