Child Sexual Assault Case Emerged After Couple Was Already Jailed for Dog Killing

An Odendaalsrus couple was already behind bars for brutally killing a neighbour’s dog when the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl came to light. On 3 September 2024, Andre (68) and Reinette (56) Labuschagne stabbed 16-month-old bull terrier Leo more than 50 times over 40–45 minutes, with Reinette handing him the knives. The horrific video went viral. They were arrested three days later and have been in custody ever since.

While they were incarcerated for the dog case, authorities uncovered that Andre had sexually assaulted an 8-year-old girl in July 2024. The child had confided in Reinette, who failed to report it.

They were sentenced on 9 June 2026:

Andre:
Sexual assault of 8-year-old: 6 years (4 suspended)
Animal cruelty & torture of Leo: 12 months
Assault on dog owner: 6 months (suspended)

Reinette:
Failing to report child sexual assault: 4 years (2 suspended)
Animal cruelty (common purpose): 12 months

The court found they showed no remorse. Both were added to the National Sexual Offenders Register and declared unfit to work with children.

Someone on the radio gave the best analogy of immigration with the example of a guest who arrives just before your family is about to dish up: Ubuntu says share the meat, but it doesn't stop everyone from resenting the guest, because that's one or two fewer pieces of meat to share with the family.

The moment the guest sits down, an invisible calculation begins. The family doesn’t stop loving each other they just notice the portions are smaller. This is the core tension in resource sharing: it isn’t the sharing that breeds resentment, it is the permanence of the reduction. Whether it’s jobs, housing, school places, hospital beds, or social grants every additional person is a fraction less for everyone already at the table.

On the food analogy, the children at the table feel the resentment most acutely; they are closest to the shrinking portions, the most vocal, the most restless. But no matter how deep that frustration runs, it is not their place to drag the guest out. Violence, intimidation, or mob action are not tools the children get to reach for, however justified their anger feels in the moment.

That responsibility belongs to the elders. The parents, the heads of the household those with the authority, the standing, and the wisdom to handle the situation with dignity. They decide when the guest has overstayed, they have the conversation, and they facilitate the departure firmly if necessary, but without chaos and without blood- and this is where as South Africans lose each other and I think with politicians involved it’s intentional.
