A few months ago, Raleigh reintroduced one of its iconic bikes of the 70s and 80s, Chopper MK2.
This 2023 limited edition (pictured below) sold out immediately after hitting the UK market at £995 (about 1.2 million naira).
It’s now being sold on eBay at £1,200 (about 1.5 million naira).
Nigerian kids of the 70s and 80s who rode Chopper in those days may not be able to buy one for their children today.
But where does the problem lie? Two issues here: naira depreciation and disappearance of local vehicle assembly plants.
In the 70s, we had Raleigh Industries Nigeria LTD at Bompai, Kano, where variety of Raleigh bicycles were manufactured. It’s no longer producing even a spoke today.
We also had Nigerian Truck Manufacturers (Gidan Fiat) that manufactured trucks in Kano; Steyr Nigeria Ltd that assembled thousands of tractors, trucks and buses in Bauchi; Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria that produced passenger vehicles in Kaduna, Volkswagen In Lagos and Anambra Motor Manufacturing Company (ANAMMCO) in Enugu. (ANAMMCO is now working, thanks to Dangote’s patronage).
As our leaders lacked focus, our economy melted down and our currency lost value, Nigeria became the junkyard of all manner of vehicles from Europe and America.
The saddest part of our economic malady is that an average civil servant who drove a brand new LADA in the late 70s and early 80s cannot afford a new Raleigh bicycle today.
HOW SOMALI INTELLIGENCE CAPTURED COMMANDER OF ASSASINS UNIT IN MOGADISHU
January 01, 2020
Voice of America
A college teacher who is the son of a senior police officer has been found guilty of leading al-Shabab's operations in Mogadishu for several years.
Prosecutors wanted to file charges connecting Ahmed to the death of more than 180 people.
In a video recorded and released by the court, Ahmed confessed to working as head of operations for al-Shabab in Mogadishu.
"I was head of operation of the city, the region," he said in the video. "There was nothing more nerve-wracking than sending out someone to do something…what will happen to them? Have they been killed?"
He said after an operation, al-Shabab bosses would call him to learn details about how it went, who fired the shots, and how many bullets were fired.
He would also send information to al-Shabab's radio station, Radio Andalus, so the group could claim responsibility for attacks and use it as propaganda.
The hunt
Ahmed, 27, from Bulomarer town in the Lower Shabelle region, has used multiple aliases over the years to evade authorities.
Somali security forces said they have been hearing his name since 2014, when al-Shabab suspects arrested for carrying pistols in Mogadishu's Hamarweyne district said a man they identified as "Hudeyfi" gave them the guns to carry out assassinations. The following year, more detained al-Shabab suspects mentioned the same name.
In January 2016, authorities arrested a man whose phone they had tracked because of contacts with known al-Shabab figures. He told the court he was a college teacher, which was verified, and he was released on bail. At the time, the officials did not realize that the man they arrested, Ahmed, was indeed Hudeyfi.
Over the following years, Ahmed used several other aliases. On November 2, 2016, a traditional elder was killed in Mogadishu. Two men arrested by the police in connection with the killing named their supervisor as "Dahir."
On December 2018, twin blasts near the National Theater in Mogadishu killed at least ten people including prominent television journalist Awil Dahir Salad. The two men captured in connection with the bombing named "Ilkacase" as co-conspirator.
Police have since established that Hudeyfi, Dahir, Ilkacase and Ahmed are the same person. On Tuesday, Ahmed confirmed this information to the court.
"I was originally known as Hudeyfi, but I worked with different groups and I gave a different name to each group," he said.
On Tuesday, Ahmed was convicted for the murder of police corporal Mohamed Omar Sheikh Osman, killed in a mosque on February 24 2017; the assassination of military General Abdullahi Mohamed Sheikh Qururuh, killed September 24, 2017; the assassination of Somali deputy attorney general Mohamed Abdirahman Mohamud on February 20, 2019; and the assassination of police General Mohamud Haji Alow on April 27, 2019.
He was also convicted for the assassination of police General Ismail Ahmed Osman on October 28, 2016. Ironically, Ahmed lived in Osman's house in the town of Marka when he was a high school student, after his father asked Osman to help his son, security officials say.
Military courts' prosecutor General Abdullahi Bule Kamey described Ahmed as a "merciless killer."
"His crimes are unmeasurable," General Kamey said. "He killed the man who raised him, the hand that fed him, General Ismail," Gen. Kamey said.
The prosecution said Ahmed spared his father's life only because he wanted to use him as a cover. "He let him live so that he bails him out when captured," Kamey said.
VOA Somali contacted an official at a Mogadishu college where Ahmed taught. The official, who asked that the college not be identified for fear of reprisal, says Ahmed taught English. The official says the college did not know about his connections with al-Shabab.
Ahmed was executed by firing squad in December 2020.

🚨BREAKING: THE COUP IS OVER | WAGNER’S RETREATING
This official statement from Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner group and the leader of this coup, says it all. I don't think anyone expected this:
"They were going to dismantle PMC Wagner. We came out on 23 June to the March of Justice. In a day, we walked to nearly 200km away from Moscow. In this time, we did not spill a single drop of blood of our fighters. Now, the moment has come when blood may spill. That’s why, understanding the responsibility for spilling Russian blood on one of the sides, we are turning back our convoys and going back to field camps according to the plan."
The President of Belarus, Lukashenko, has been in talks with Prigozhin all day and has taken credit for the peace agreement.
Prigozhin accepted the terms of Lukashenko’s agreement and agreed to halt the movement of his forces and return back to his bases.
The agreement also guarantees security for fighters of PMC Wagner.
It seems that the attempted coup has come to an end, and Prigozhin, along with his men, will return to their bases.
Reports of Wagner forces not only leaving Moscow Oblas, but also leaving Rostov.
Russian media reports that criminal cases have already been dropped from Yevgeny Prigozhin and that Prigozhin and his forces will receive FULL IMMUNITY
Restrictions on the movement of vehicles have been lifted from the Voronezh region which saw clashes earlier during the coup.
MY THOUGHTS:
- I did not expect this would end peacefully with a deal as it seemed both sides seemed at the point of no return
- I have no idea how Prigozhin and Putin can both operate in Russia with what just transpired, and I also have no idea what will happen with the war in Ukraine but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a space deal reached.
- Today was another example of citizen journalism replacing mainstream media with UNBIASED and UNCENSORED live breaking news.
- I am fried, been awake for more than 30 hours, initially doing a space with former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan before shifting to the Coup space which is at 21 hours and counting. Time for me to finally sleep!
You have many choices in life but the choices you have don’t include the ability to choose who your boss is…with one exception: votes that count in an election. Other then that, you have to learn to work with the boss you have at work. Even 360 degree appraisals don’t change it.
Subhan Allah! The bone structure of puffer fish is very mindblowing.
All this time we thought is just skin expansion, because if there were bones, how would this fish grow up?Are bones hard?
Apparently the puffer fish bones were arranged very mathematically like origami! It can expand and shrink due to the arrangements of spatial networks. A great human engineer- even a great man has not been able to come up with a design like this.
The more we study nature, the more we are amazed by the wisdom of its creator.
