در ۱۸ تیر ۱۳۷۸، کوی دانشگاه تهران صحنه یکی از تلخ‌ترین سرکوب‌های تاریخ معاصر ایران بود. در تصاویر و روایت‌های آن روزها، دانشجویان مورد ضرب‌وشتم قرار گرفتند و برخی از ساختمان‌ها و طبقات بالا به پایین پرتاب شدند. بسیاری زخمی، بازداشت یا قربانی خشونت شدند.

قالیباف در آن زمان فرمانده نیروی هوایی سپاه بود و نام او در میان فرماندهانی مطرح شد که از برخورد سخت با اعتراضات دانشجویی حمایت کردند.

کسانی که امروز از «اعتماد» و «مذاکره» با چهره‌های امنیتی سخن می‌گویند، باید ابتدا به گذشته و کارنامه آنان نگاه کنند.
