@Lillyrcoe I agree! Google is free and this class really shows that anything can be educational: an advertisement, youtube video, hot cheetos debate😂 kept me interested for sure. #rgcmtalkback21
Understanding others is so important to me. States shouldn’t work to censor what students learn. Different perspectives is what shapes our country. Like journalism, the job of education should be to provide both sides and let people come up with their own stance. #rgcmtalkback21
This class has opened my eyes to the different perspectives of others! It also shows me that as a country we have a long way to go before we reach true equality and unity. #rgcmtalkback21
@devinfieldTV Hi Devin! My dad was adopted at 2 weeks old and he told me following this interview with him that it’s made him wonder what his life would’ve been like if he knew his bio parents; a thought he said he never really thought too much about bc his parents now are all he knows.
Colorism is still a huge issue in AHANA communities. Rapper, Latto, formerly known as Mulatto recently@changed her name after receiving backlash that her name derives from the beginning era of colorism #rgcmtalkback21
As a reporter now, I feel like those of lower income are less likely to share their story on camera because that class has been negatively portrayed in the media for so long #rgcmtalkback21
@khaybeers this is really interesting! that is one component of social media i find draining: the need to always keep up. I don’t think I could ever completely stop using social media, but I do enjoy my breaks #rgcmtalkback21
When schools returned this fall, one ISD in Texas went against Abbott’s executive order and put a mask mandate in place because without one they’d have to switch to virtual but they can’t because most of their population is rural and doesn’t have access at home #rgcmtalkback21
I think virtual learning of the pandemic showed that the digital divide still exists. Some schools had to give chrome books away due to the fact that students might not have access at home. #rgcmtalkback21
One thing that surprised me was the percentage of AHANAs having access to internet. That alone shows that the digital divide is less about race and more so about age and class #rgcmtalkback21
@MarcoTurr2021 @ClaireWilsonJMC i see Kylie as an “IT” girl as well but her body is unobtainable for most women and it creates unrealistic and further creates body image issues #rgcmtalkback21
I like that in recent weeks social media platforms have been held accountable for their contributions to body image issues in teens. it seems harmless but these platforms are profiting off of eating disorders, depression, etc #rgcmtalkback21
i love that the new wave of feminism is all about choice. women were objectified in early media but they realized they could self-sexualize themself + profit off of it while empowering other women #rgcmtalkback21
@Lillyrcoe I agree! I felt like it was a great way for us to reflect on our growth not only as people who will hopefully become more aware of others but also within this class to show that we’re actually learning something that can be a plied to our everyday lives. #rgcmtalkback21
I loved learning about the history of the portrayal of women. Im grateful new wave of feminism allows women to just be whether she wants to be a housewife, CEO, gay, doesn’t want kids, sexualized. Current media reflects that in the different characters of women. #rgcmtalkback21
No brand is perfect. There are great campaigns and flawed ones that missed the mark. That’s why it’s important to have diverse representation at the table to include various viewpoints before launching an advertisement that could potentially be tone deaf #rgcmtalkback21
@SBhasclass I agree! When items become mainstream in white culture they become more expensive to make them less accessible. it’s the same concept for urban neighborhoods. The same houses become unaffordable, pushing them out of their own neighborhood. #rgcmtalback21
This class has really opened my eyes to other civil rights movements that occurred in the 1960s. It wasn’t just Black Americans, it was all AHANAs and lesbian, gay, and trans people as well. #rgcmtalkback21
Manifest Destiny is so interesting to me. As a Christian, I understand why others have issues with christianity because it’s been used to justify racism, homophobia, genocide, etc. #rgcmtalkback21
