It was 1977 when feminists in the UK (& maybe here?) gathered for "Reclaim the Night" marches to protest violence against women. In Australia, the contemporary problems are horrific - and PK, it is obvious that women as well as men on the conservative side of politics here maintain a level of indifference to victims and hostility to activists that is itself resoundingly sexist and violent.
Have we heard a single word about femicide "terror" from Dutton, Ley, Reynolds, or their favourite/favoured media? No. Are they calling for some of the vast "defence" budget to be diverted to far greater protection for endangered women and far more effective education/treatment of men across ALL social classes? No.
Co-opted high profile women are central to the problem: blaming female victims - worst public cases Brittany Higgins, Rosie Batty, Grace Tame - but 1000s of others.
When sexism is worsened by racism (towards refugees as well as First Nations) the catastrophe grows. We have to see how men are intrinsically and ideologically protected by conservative forces to understand what is happening in Australia where a "fair go" is NOT available to all.
Please call out this political/politicised entrenched sexism. The harm it does is incalculable, most especially when women are the mouthpieces.
