Maybe you've seen the truly shocking figures for migrant deaths in the Atlantic Ocean, reaching nearly 10,000 for 2024. How should we deal with such numbers, not least when they differ radically to other ac/counts? With @msdionis for Border Criminologies.

After being brought back to the Ocean Viking, a little girl lost her heartbeat.
She was resuscitated on deck, before being medically evacuated to Malta.
We are devastated to learn that the 7yo did not survive.
Once again, a lost life that could have been prevented.
This morning, 101 survivors, incl. 7 children, finally reached a Place of Safety in #Taranto after enduring 2 days of unnecessary hardship with waves up to 3,5 meters.
Nearly half of the survivors required treatment for seasickness. We now wish them all the best!
Over the past days, hundreds of people have died at Europe’s borders. Yet, there’s hardly any reporting, no public discussion, let alone outcry. Join our ‘What the Scandalization?’ panel to discuss whether and how we can still scandalise increasingly normalised border violence.
@SOSMedIntl is in @CNN's 2024 Year in Pictures. In March, our team rescued 25 people from a boat adrift in the #Mediterranean. Tragically, 60 lives were lost before we arrived. By bearing witness, we ensure that the stories of those lost are not forgotten. https://t.co/B25CDkrRxL

The death toll in #GazaStrip has now surpassed 30,000 people.
Over 70,000 people have been injured.
This is a man made disaster. People dying from bombs & strikes - even more now dying from consequences of siege imposed on #GazaStrip
Despite repeated calls, still no ceasefire.
The voyage from Senegal to Spain was supposed to take a week. More than a month later, the boat carrying 101 men and boys was adrift.
At last, on day 36, a fishing vessel spotted them.
For 38 migrants, it was salvation. For the others, it was too late. https://t.co/VmK0WxZlV6
These times are dark. Poetry won't solve everything or that much but it may bring some solace. Lovely site. Lovely (poetic) idea. https://t.co/BG0AlPuORe
