Statement | Sixteen Arab and Islamic nations strongly condemn Israel's announcement of appointing a diplomatic envoy to the so-called “Somaliland”

Doha | April 18, 2026

We, the foreign ministers of the State of Qatar; the State of Kuwait; Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; Arab Republic of Egypt; Federal Republic of Somalia; Republic of the Sudan; State of Libya; People's Republic of Bangladesh; People's Democratic Republic of Algeria; State of Palestine; Republic of Türkiye; Republic of Indonesia; Islamic Republic of Pakistan; Islamic Republic of Mauritania; Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; and Sultanate of Oman strongly condemn Israel's appointment of a diplomatic envoy to the so- called Somaliland. We consider it a blatant violation of the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

We reiterate our categorical rejection of all unilateral actions that infringe upon the unity or sovereignty of states, emphasizing our unwavering support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia, and our support for the legitimate Somali state institutions as the sole representatives of the will of the Somali people.

We also stress that such actions are a clear violation of the principles of international law, the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and represent a dangerous precedent that could undermine stability in the Horn of Africa region, negatively impacting regional peace and security in general.

Mohammed Al-Mesfer, a political science professor at Qatar University, said he was surprised that Arab states did not condemn Israel’s strikes on Iran, stating that Israel initiated the aggression.

Speaking to Al Jazeera Mubasher on Saturday, he highlighted the current threats Israel is posing to other Arab countries, including Lebanon and Syria, saying that Israel starts one war so that “we forget another” and that the U.S. does not stand with Gulf states but with Israel.

He also called for supporting diplomatic efforts, such as the one currently played by Pakistan and several other countries, to end the war.
