@mkh_reads@georgejroy I’m super careful about blogs. There can be some good info but filtering through it for 150+ students is not easily done as a high school teacher.
@georgejroy#EDTE731Fall2018Chat safe info is available on the net but teachers fear depth of research from students, lack of reasoning skills, and inability to decipher good info from simple opinions. Research is key as well as planning up front.
@nicholejmack@georgejroy Kids do know how to use social media but I have found that they don’t know how to use it in an educational setting. They play games and chat but find it hard to utilize it educationally- this is where teachers come in.
@nicholejmack@georgejroy The level of anxiety for students that has accompanied the technological age is astounding. They cannot get away from bullying once home due to the nature of cell phone and social media use. Teachers must be vigilant to help alleviate this problem.
@meganjo66302717@georgejroy Personal information availability is so important. The kids have to be made aware that danger lurks everywhere on the internet. It’s so scary actually. Social media in particular can be very useful for class but dangerous for students too.
@Lizzy7391@georgejroy You are right. Each system has different policies about online student safety. It’s important to make kids completely aware of what those rules are. Good social media use requires a lot of up front work.
@mkh_reads@georgejroy Good info is still there. Its important to tell the kids to look for credible sources and see who had sponsored the information. They have to look for legitimate sites and not blogs etc
@georgejroy#EDTE731Fall2018Chat Net safety requires constant teacher monitoring and stated expectations up front. Students need to learn to harness the net and social media in a meaningful and safe way. Continual engagement and reiterated expectations are key
