Democratic socialist @AberKawas could become the first Palestinian American elected to statewide office in New York if she wins her race for State Senate in November. She just won the Democratic primary in her Queens district.

Kawas says support for Palestine is becoming an important litmus test in progressive politics:

"What we are seeing right now is a redefinition of what people want to define as progressive politics, and that Palestine needs to be part of that fold. Having an antiwar platform needs to be part of that.

"If you are saying 'I want to deliver affordability,' if you're saying you're against ICE, then people will only see that as consistent in your politics if you're also saying that you're against a genocide in Palestine. ⚡️ Before winning tonight’s Democratic primary in Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, Melat Kiros joined Ryan Grim and Murtaza Hussain to discuss what a progressive U.S. foreign policy should look like.

Kiros argued the United States should replace exploitation with cooperation, center workers and human dignity, and rethink its relationships with countries across the Global South as the world confronts major global challenges.

Ryan Grim pointed to a historical example from Greg Grandin’s "America, América," describing former Vice President Henry Wallace (1941-45) championing a vision of American influence being used to expand labor rights and democracy abroad rather than simply project power.
