Parliament to debate ban on Spotlight and other casting directory fees

A proposed amendment to the Employment Rights Bill, which would close the loophole that allows casting directories to charge work-seekers, is scheduled to be debated in the House of Lords.

Ending the exemption would affect not just casting directories but any directory through which all workers in the entertainment industry find work, irrespective of their job role or discipline. It would mean that all platforms would have to change the way that they do business and stop charging their ‘tax on hope’ to the workforce.

Our High Court case against Spotlight will take place in July 2025, where we will take legal action intending to ensure Spotlight complies with the current law, as we understand it, which caps the amounts they can charge upfront to artists seeking work. This is about saving Equity members the money you’re paying just to be visible to recruiters.

Producers cannot claim ignorance of the law in 2024- or sidestep the union agreements used by 95% of theatre, film, & TV.

If your contracts don’t meet the law, we will sue you.
