When teachers who love teaching and are extremely good at it would rather do anything other than teach, including be unemployed, you know the ppl running the education system in that country have got things very, very wrong.
Teacher well-being is about ensuring staff don't have to regularly spend a large chunk of their weekend working, not about giving them a sachet of hot chocolate to drink while they're doing it.
Every child deserves a teacher who cares about them. Every child also deserves a teacher who is supported, appreciated, and treated like a professional.
When a teacher posts about the unrelenting exhaustion we are experiencing it doesn’t mean they don’t like teaching, don’t like their students, or that they have terrible admin. It could just mean that the weight of everything over the last few years is exhausting without healing.
Tips for new admin:
1) Assume your staff want to be good at their job. Give them the benefit of the doubt.
2) Trust their professional judgment.
3) Involve staff in decision making when possible.
4) Communicate to your staff that you value them.
5) ALWAYS have their back.
Work-life balance sets the bar too low.
No one grows up dreaming of a job that doesn't interfere with their life. We hope to spend our waking hours doing work that enriches our lives.
A toxic job drains you. A decent job sustains you. A healthy job invigorates you.
Giving teachers hardly any time in their rooms after they return to get ready for the school year might suggest that they were supposed to be preparing for the school year during their unpaid time off.
If we want educators to work during the summer, pay them for their time.
We are doing best by our students when we take care of teachers. As someone once said, "the teacher's working environment is the student's learning environment".
I’ve come to the conclusion that being a classroom teacher right now isn’t about actually teaching kids. Instead, it’s been about their behavior and mental health. Which…is not my actual degree or profession. Still wondering when the promised mental health cavalry will arrive.
@thewazowskiiii Is your purpose to "be where things are happening and experience the city" or to be home more often? If you plan on being home, or plan on hosting friends (instead of going out), pick the bigger place. If you want to experience the city, live as close to it as you can!!
@gautiersue Check out Moody's Math Challenge. It's an annual math modeling competition. Students analyze data in order to come up with a solution to a real problem in the world.
