@JamesAFurey "Hey prof, here's the documentation of EVERYTHING we did, all the attempts we made to get him to help. He did zero. If you penalize our grades at all because he couldn't read it... and clearly, he's trying to pass off the work of others as his own - plagiarism, we'll see the dean
@JamesAFurey ...presentation one week in advance. Day of presentation, we had to give him a paper copy. Our presentations - very polished. His presentation - he couldn't read many of the words; stumbled over everything. Looked like a buffoon - it was the first time he had read through it...
@howie_hua At the precalc level, I start explaining to students that if you want to get good at math, you've got to be lazy. Before you blindly follow some procedure, you have to think, "hey, is there an easy way to do this or simplify this?"
@sea_ehm@howie_hua x^2-x^2=x^2-x^2
x(x-x) = (x+x)(x-x)
x(x-x)/(x-x) = (x+x)(x-x)/(x-x)
x=x+x
1=2.
On the 3rd line, I divided both sides by zero (and cancelled). It resulted in 1 = 2. So, actually, if you divide both sides by zero you don't necessarily get equality. :>P
@howie_hua@RebeckaMozdeh Multiply by 8 (80%). 24*8 is 160+32=192 (or alternatively as a quick mental check, 25*8=200-8 or 96*2) I have number sense, so I know where to place the decimal.
@big2cat @matinintoronto@educator4ever36@Thinkingschool2 Agreed. Makes it obvious what two books not to purchase and read, unless I wanted to humor myself. "The Thinking Teacher" - apparently doesn't think there are boundaries.
@howie_hua@gfletchy Both fractions are fractions that my middle school math teacher required students to learn as decimals. So I'm simply comparing .875 with .8333... If they were unfamiliar I'd either use common numerators, else common denominators to compare; whichever was easier mental arithmetic
@engineers_feed Egads at the lack of basic physics knowledge in the responses. You race them rolling down a slope. Regardless of density, length, diameter, it will be a tie. But, if one is hollow, it loses.
Cuba-Rushford middle school scholastic team off to a 2-0 win record so far today, outscoring both opponents by a 3 to 1 margin. Realllly difficult questions. #mycrcs. High School team of 1 is 1-1.
@ModestTeacher You can google the case - recently, there was a student with an IEP who graduated with a 3.4 gpa. He could not read. He sued the school district and won. He won the first appeal. District has to pay for 888 hours of tutoring.
More students need to do this.
@howie_hua Prep period, one student in here finishing an exam... I read this out loud. She laughed. <Students who laugh at math jokes are the best students.>
