Surely @ipoans isn't giving out false legal information. Landlords can ask for a new lease to be signed, but they have no RIGHT to a new lease, nor move a periodic lease to a fixed term lease. Just like I can ask for a $100,000 raise but I have no right to one.

We can put to rest any idea that @ipoans actually cares about the rental housing crisis if this is the guidance they give landlords. No wonder we are in the state we are in. We need to crack down on fixed term leases.

It shouldn't need to be said but obviously emergencies are 24/7. Any HRFE/EMO/HRM capability that doesn't have capacity on a 24/7 basis is useless for emergencies. So far, that's the case for hfxALERT.

Lastly I'll just note, and this is key: today's incident occurred outside of the normal Monday to Friday routine of the corporate HRM types. I've said all along this is a huge problem for hfxALERT. It can't be M-F 9-5.

Ok, you all knew I'd have something to say about hfxALERT eventually. So, here it is. I think there's a real debate to be had about when that system should be used. How serious does an incident have to be before using it? That's a key question.

Personally, I think this morning would be a good time to use the system. Roads flooded, rescues being made, manholes loose, other hazards etc. It would be a good opportunity to simply put some information out (stay off the roads, etc). I *do not* think an emergency alert was required, by any stretch, but an hfxALERT could have been helpful.

But of course, it is nowhere to be found. Now, their response might be "well, this wasn't a serious enough incident". Fine, but it was more serious than the last couple of times that hfxALERTs were issued.

This inconsistency is a huge part of the problem. People have been shown they cannot rely on this system. Its going to take a lot of work if HRM/EMO is going to dig out of that hole. Not a good start today.
