When I was a teacher, my students and I always took time this month to honor the generations of Black Americans who fought against injustice to achieve equal rights.
May we all reflect on our past as we continue working to build a society that lives up to its democratic ideals.
From our earliest days, Black history has always been American history โ and Black folks have profoundly shaped our American culture through music, art, literature, sports, and beyond. One month a year is not sufficient to celebrate the power of the movements and the people who have fought for the rights we enjoy today. Thatโs something that we have to do each and every day, as we strive to live up to their example and make sure our children and grandchildren remember their stories.
Through struggle and discipline, persistence and faith, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped move this country forward. As we honor his legacy today, letโs remember the lesson he taught us: that even in the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can help change it. In honor of #MLKDay, I hope youโll do what you can in your community to create a better future for us all.
