In the wild, survival is often about courage, resilience, and sometimes, a little help from those who protect the untamed.

Yesterday, our dedicated KWS Mara Vet Team with support from @SheldrickTrust tended to Pamoja 2, a lioness who has faced not one, but two vicious territorial attacks in just a month. After straying into the Paradise Pride's domain, Pamoja 2 suffered serious injuries, including infected wounds along her back, hind limbs, and flanks. Despite the odds, our team cleaned and treated her wounds with care.

In a bid to offer her safety and a chance to heal, she’s been relocated to the Marsh Pride’s territory, where she will be closely monitored by our vigilant rangers.
We remain hopeful that Pamoja 2 will rise stronger than ever.

Today, Prof. Charles Musyoki, Director of Wildlife and Community Service at Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), officially launched the Vulture Multi-Species Action Plan (2024-2034) in a virtual event. This release comes as part of the lead-up to International Vultures Awareness Day (IVAD), which is being observed tomorrow, 7th September 2024. The formulation of this plan aligns with Section 49 of the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, which mandates KWS to collaborate with stakeholders in developing species action plans.

In his address, Prof. Musyoki highlighted the essential role vultures play in Kenya's ecosystems and stressed the importance of international cooperation in conserving these migratory birds. He noted that vultures are listed as species of concern by the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Animals (CMS) and are covered under the Raptors Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). To ensure their long-term survival, conservation and management efforts are needed at local, national, and global levels.

Prof. Musyoki emphasized the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration, involving governments, NGOs, communities, and international organizations, to successfully implement the action plan. The 10-year plan sets clear objectives for the restoration and conservation of eight vulture species in Kenya. Panelists at the event included representatives from the Peregrine Fund, National Museums of Kenya, Nature Kenya, and senior staff from KWS. #TunzaMaliYako

Dr. Omondi further emphasized the importance of hard work in their studies and urged them to maintain high ethical standards—a hallmark of the Institute. “As future leaders in the wildlife sector, it is critical that you uphold integrity, trust, discipline, and consistently do the right thing,” he advised.

In a remarkable feat for conservation efforts, Meru National Park welcomes the arrival of a new white rhino, adding to the growing population of these beautiful creatures. This month has proven particularly fruitful, with a total of three white rhino calves being born.

The births took place in the park sanctuary, which is home to both black and white rhino populations under 24-hour surveillance by dedicated rangers.

Conservation efforts by Kenya Wildlife Service have created a vibrant breeding ground for rhinos in the sanctuary. The birth of each calf signifies hope for the future of white rhinos, highlighting the progress being made in their conservation.
