A milestone in our biotech journey: We completed an Excellence Through Stewardship (ETS) audit of our biotech potato program with @RAB_Rwanda facilities, covering field trials, seed multiplication, biosafety compliance, traceability, containment, & responsible lifecycle mgt.
What if the answer to rising pesticide costs is hidden in a wild potato 🥔?
CIP breeders are using traits from wild potato relatives to develop varieties with stronger resistance to late blight, helping farmers reduce inputs.

RAB is advancing research on biotech potato varieties such as improved Victoria and Ndamira, which have demonstrated resistance to late blight under field conditions, offering a promising pathway to reduce farmers’ production costs while ensuring high yields and food security.
At its core, RAB is working closely with partners to evaluate the agronomic performance and effectiveness of these varieties, supporting evidence-based decision-making and future adoption, with participants expressing strong appreciation and optimism about the promising results.
'A Decade of Lasting OFSP Impact'
For more than a decade, the impact of OFSP innovations continues to shine through the dedication of farming communities. Mrs. Drocella Yankurije, a seed multiplier in Muhanga District, is a living example. #OFSP#SeedSystems#FoodSecurity
The difference is becoming clearer every day! At 45 days after planting, biotech potato varieties are showing remarkable resistance to potato late blight compared to conventional varieties under the same field conditions. Promising step to resilient potato production.
🇷🇼 Rwanda's OFSP seed multipliers are ready for 2026 Season C (June–August)! High-quality Orange-Fleshed Sweetpotato planting materials are available nationwide — South, North, East & West. 🌱

Quite an open and sincere discussion aimed at co-creating homegrown solutions with policy makers in Agriculture. This is encouraging to me as a scientist to have an open door to provide data derived solutions to be absorbed as policy
Its fulfilling to see the results of collaborative work with dedicated colleagues—moving seamlessly from incubation to implementation, & ultimately to scaling and adoption. Its greater when govt leadership is core to scaling process, ensuring sustainability, legitimacy, & impact.

#BioCapRwanda "With strong national leadership and long-term partnerships, we move from vision to action laying the foundation for a center of excellence that will benefit Rwanda, the region, and the continent"~ Lawrence Kent, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
The #BioCapProject is more than science, it’s a new breed revolution. By advancing disease-resistant potato, cassava & banana varieties, it will boost yields, cut losses & pesticide use, strengthen competitiveness, and raise farmer incomes.~ Dr. Hugo Campos,@Cipotato Deputy DG
The BioCap Project is here to complement Rwanda’s climate adaptation strategy. By empowering local scientists, strengthening regulation, and delivering improved crops to farmers, BioCap positions Rwanda as a hub for safe, climate-smart biotechnology in Africa. #BioCapRwanda
Huge congratulations to all partners for making the #BioCapProject launch a success!
Higher climate-resilient root yields + More stable processing value chains for flour & starch = Improved household food security. Together, we are turning this vision into reality. @Cipotato
An intensive field study tour to Rwanda’s #OFSP value chain has been completed #B4WE partners from South & North Kivu, DRC explored EGS production, certified seed systems, root production, and processing across public & private actors. Grateful to CIP and RAB for hosting
With the CIP-B4WE project, our goal is clear: improve the quality of orange-fleshed sweetpotato seed to boost yields and enhance food and nutrition security for communities in Eastern DRC.#OFSP#FoodSecurity#DRC
