Salsay Weyane Tigray Urges Immediate Response to Escalating IDP Catastrophe

June 16, 2025 Salsay Weyane Tigray, a prominent opposition movement in Tigray, has issued a call for immediate action to address the deepening humanitarian crisis facing internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the region. The party condemned both the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) for what it described as the continued political exploitation of displaced communities.

According to the statement released Monday, displaced populations across Tigray are making desperate appeals for safe return to their homes ahead of the approaching rainy season. Salsay Weyane Tigray warned that conditions in IDP camps have deteriorated dramatically, with hundreds reportedly dying from hunger, disease, and lack of basic medical care. The group labeled this “the apex of five years of unrelenting misery.”

“The Government of Ethiopia and the TPLF group are callously gambling with the lives of these vulnerable individuals, holding them hostage for their own political objectives,” the statement declared.

The party urged both domestic and international actors to step in, stressing the urgent need for a coordinated humanitarian intervention. It further called on all stakeholders concerned with peace and stability in the Horn of Africa to respond to what it described as an “escalating and inhumane tragedy.”

The IDP crisis in Tigray has persisted despite the Pretoria Agreement signed in late 2022, which included provisions for the safe return of displaced civilians. Many IDPs remain stranded in overcrowded camps with inadequate access to food, water, and healthcare, and human rights groups have repeatedly flagged the situation as critical.

Salsay Weyane Tigray’s latest statement adds pressure to mounting calls from civil society and international organizations for accountability and swift action to prevent further loss of life.

The party concluded its statement with a renewed demand: “The time for decisive humanitarian intervention is now.”
