He then says that Dr. Kizza Besigye doesn't want to be tried! But Dr. Besigye is not opposed to being tried - all he has demanded for is a free and fair trial, guaranteed by Article 28 of our Constitution. Among the key tenets of a free trial are:

1. The presumption of innocence
2. Independent, impartial and competent judge
3. Representation by counsel of one's choice
4. Adequate time and facilties to prepare defence
5. Public, speedy hearing in open court with opportunity to examine prosecution witnesses.

Can he get a fair hearing when his lawyers are being persecuted? When the state tried so hard to hide witnesses? When several applications for refusal over partiality have been denied? Can he?

Today we were at Makindye Magistrate's Court for the bail application of Counsel Erias Lukwago, who is charged with misprision of treason. Court now says it will deliver a ruling tomorrow via its online system, ECCMIS (Electronic Court Case Management Information System).

Imagine an accused person - on the most serious charges of treason - being stripped of legal representation in this fashion! One of his two lead lawyers, Hon. Erias Lukwago in detention, charged with misprison of treason, and the other, Hon. @MarthaKarua declared persona non grata and deported from Ugandan soil. What a time!
