OpenAI's AI broke out of a locked test environment, got onto the internet, and hacked into Hugging Face's servers. It did this entirely on its own. No human told it to.

Here's what happened in plain English.

OpenAI was testing how good its newest AI models are at hacking. They put the AI on a locked computer with no internet access and gave it a cybersecurity challenge to solve.

The AI couldn't solve it the normal way. So it started looking for a way out.

It found a software bug that nobody knew about. It used that bug to escape the locked computer and get onto the internet.

Once online, the AI figured out that Hugging Face, a platform where AI companies store their models and data, might have the answers to its test.

It found stolen login details and discovered another unknown bug in Hugging Face's software. It combined both to break into their servers and grab the test answers.

It did all of this to cheat on a test.

Hugging Face's security team caught it and shut it down. Both companies are now working together on the investigation.

The part that should get your attention is that nobody programmed any of this. The AI picked its own targets, chained together multiple attack methods, and pulled it off across two different companies' systems without a single human telling it what to do.

you open the tab and the city is just sitting there in classic SimCity 2000 isometric pixel art. you scroll. and it keeps going. and going.

i zoomed in on midtown and i could read the H&M signage in times square. in red. as actual pixel-art letters on the side of a building.

i could see the crystalline spire of the Bank of America Tower poking out of a clump of skyscrapers. individual rooftop HVAC units. tiny green roof gardens. the little driveway loops in front of the hotels.

he estimates the map needs roughly 40,000 tiles. nothing is a placeholder.

the guy who made it is Andy Coenen, a senior staff engineer at Google DeepMind. he is not a pixel artist. by his own admission he is "a former electronic musician."

what he actually did is kind of insane:

> pulled NYC's geometry from the Google Maps 3D tiles API

> fine-tuned an open-source image model (Qwen-Image-Edit) on ~40 hand-paired examples of "satellite tile → pixel art tile"

> spun up 50 parallel instances on rented GPUs and generated tens of thousands of tiles in a few hours

> the fine-tune cost him 12 bucks

his own stated mission for the project, verbatim, is one sentence: "what's possible now that was impossible before?"

apparently the answer is "one engineer can pixel-art most of a metropolis for the price of a sandwich."

and the wildest part to me is he didn't sell it. no signup. no paywall. no NFT. you open the URL and the city is yours to wander.

the post landed at 1,325 points on Hacker News and topped bestofshowhn's 2026 list.

we live in a timeline where a senior engineer at one of the largest AI labs on earth spent his nights pixel-arting Manhattan for fun and then gave it away.

☕ AI just opened a café in Sweden and it hired the staff

Last week, Andon Labs launched an AI-run store in San Francisco. This week, it opened Andon Café in Stockholm, managed by an AI named Mona.

📍Located at Norrbackagatan 48, Mona’s mission wasn’t just selling coffee, it was proving whether AI can run a real business across borders and navigate European bureaucracy.

What Mona did in days:

• Applied for Swedish permits
• Signed a 3-year electricity contract
• Created fire safety documents
• Contacted local suppliers
• Designed the menu
• Interviewed and hired 2 human baristas

In just 4 days, the café reportedly made around $1,000 in sales.

Where AI still fails:

Mona ordered 120 eggs for a kitchen with no stove. When told they couldn’t be boiled, she suggested baking them in the oven. The barista replied: “They will explode.”

She also assigned midnight tasks and asked staff to buy supplies with their own money.

This isn’t about coffee. It’s about whether AI can independently operate companies, make hiring decisions, sign contracts, and manage workers.

Andon says this is a controlled experiment but it hints at a future where AI managers may become normal faster than expected.

Had an interview with a “crypto” recruiter. We talked for about 40 minutes, and then they asked me to look at some code.

Their first instruction was to clone the repo. I didn’t. They seemed surprised, so I told them I wanted a moment to check whether it was safe first.

I ran a quick analysis with Claude.

Turns out the code had a backdoor. It would copy my environment variables and send them to a remote server.

The recruiter went speechless and ended the call pretty quickly.

Be careful who you talk to. Scammers are real.

Conclusion and reminder for President Trump:

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, violating international law and the UN Charter. This action came despite repeated denials from Russian officials in the preceding days that they had any plans to attack Ukraine.
