[Housing in Asia ②] Jakarta's USD 18,800/m² District Gets a Housing Experiment

If buying a home in the city becomes unaffordable, does moving farther away have to be the only option?
In Menteng, one of Jakarta’s most expensive neighborhoods, six households are testing a different answer by forming a cooperative and building without a developer.
Instead of owning homes to buy and sell, they lease the land long-term, share construction costs, and get their contributions back when they leave.
For residents, living in the heart of Jakarta has meant not only a place to call home, but also dramatically shorter commutes and lower transportation costs.
Yet with substantial upfront savings still required, can a model like this really offer an alternative for everyone?
DUNIA visits this small housing experiment in Jakarta to ask a larger question: what changes when we begin to think of housing not as an asset to own and trade, but as a right to live in the city?
