WHY MOST HOSPITALS IN NIGERIA DON'T ALLOW RELATIVES, INCLUDING HUSBANDS, INTO THE THEATRE DURING CS
I am a medical doctor. Let me explain this controversy honestly.
If you go to most hospitals in Nigeria and ask "Can my husband enter the theatre to witness my CS?" The answer is always NO.
They will tell you: "It's hospital policy. Relatives are not allowed."
But is that the whole truth?
No.
THE HONEST TRUTH IS IN TWO PARTS:
1. WHY SOME FEW STANDARD HOSPITALS ALLOW IT:
Yes, some few standard hospitals DO allow it. And I must commend them.
I have seen hospitals, especially a few good private hospitals in Abuja and Portharcourt, where husbands are allowed to sit beside their wives during CS. They wear a theatre gown, they hold their wife's hand, they witness the birth of their child.
Why can they allow it? Because they have a standard theatre.
A standard theatre has:
- A qualified surgeon
- A qualified anesthetist whose ONLY job is to monitor your life
- Trained scrub nurses
- Proper monitoring machines
- Standard sterility
When you have all that, you have nothing to hide. You are proud to let the family see you work. And that transparency builds trust. Families never forget that experience.
These hospitals are proof that Nigerian healthcare CAN be world-class.
2. WHY MOST HOSPITALS DON'T ALLOW IT:
Now, why do MOST hospitals not allow it?
Because what happens behind that door cannot stand being witnessed.
Ask yourself: If everything is standard, why are you afraid of the husband seeing it?
The reality in many places is:
A CS, which is a major surgery, is being done by ONE doctor who gives you a drug to make you sleep, and then rushes to operate on you himself. No anesthetist is monitoring your heart, your breathing, your blood pressure. If you stop breathing, who will know?
The theatre is not complete. Sometimes it's just one doctor and one auxiliary staff managing two lives - mother and baby.
And the aftercare - how mothers are cleaned and moved after surgery - if a husband saw it, he would cry.
So they tell him to wait outside. Not to protect your privacy, sister. But to protect a system that is managing.
This is not to attack all hospitals. I know many doctors are trying their best with poor resources. But trying our best should not mean we should hide.
3. The Emotional Factor:A theatre is a high-pressure zone. In an emergency, one distraction can kill. An emotional husband or patient relative who panics and attacks the surgeon or shouts at the team can cost his own wife her life. Even world-class hospitals that allow husbands first counsel them to stay calm and not interfere. Safety requires concentration.
So yes, sometimes we keep relatives out not just to hide poor standards, but to protect the concentration of the team and the safety of the mother.
WHAT WE SHOULD DEMAND AS NIGERIANS:
1. CCTV in every theatre: We put CCTV in banks to protect money. We can put CCTV in theatres to protect lives. A camera protects the good doctor - it proves he did his best. And it exposes quackery. Both patients and doctors need it.
2. For my fellow doctors: Let us be brave to say "No anesthetist, no surgery." It is not arrogance, it is patient safety.
3. For patients and families:Please, seek professional, standard care. Don't choose a hospital because it is cheap. Before you register for antenatal, ask: Do you have a qualified anesthetist? Do you have a standard theatre team? Do you allow my husband to witness my delivery?
A hospital doing things right will answer you with pride. A hospital that is cutting corners will get angry that you asked.
Mothers should not die while giving life. Fathers should not be kept outside while their wives fight for life.
If we want to stop saying "it was God's will" for avoidable deaths, we must demand transparency.
Let fathers in. Let families see. Let cameras record. Let standard be standard.
Because in that theatre, there are two lives - and both deserve to be protected.
“For the first time in Nigerian history, a former presidential adviser, former DG of a Federal agency, former Minister of the federation and two term Governor of a state was thoroughly grilled by both EFCC and ICPC.
Yet, no news of property seizure, no freezing of Bank account or confiscation of hard currency.
This is Malam Nasir El-Rufai” 💪

A few days ago, I received unsolicited offers of $3 million, along with an invitation to a confidential meeting in London, from a highly placed individual whom I have been informed is connected to #Nigerian President Bola #Tinubu. I believe these offers were an attempt to persuade my firm to end our campaign concerning President Tinubu's alleged #heroin-trafficking records.
I refused the offers, immediately preserved screenshots of the exchanges, and forwarded all the evidence to the U.S. Department of Justice (@TheJusticeDept). It remains shocking to me that, despite the @FBI and #DEA's heroin-trafficking allegations concerning Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, @CNN , the @washingtonpost, and the @nytimes have never reported on this shocking story.
It seems The Washington Post’s slogan, “Democracy Dies in Darkness,” applies only when The Washington Post is scrutinizing President @realDonaldTrump and @Republicans. When it concerns the @JoeBiden Administration blocking the release of drug-trafficking documents concerning an African president, there is silence. True journalism in America is dead.

I see how some of you talk about Nasir El-Rufai’s child struggling with being gay and substance abuse.
About a Sheikh’s son converting to Christianity.
About Governor Soludo’s son supporting LGBT.
About Yahaya Bello having a child with special needs.
You look at families in leadership and act like their struggles are different.
Like their pain is new.
Like crisis only happens to “important” people.
The truth is, many of you are carrying real-life crises in your own homes.
Situations you’ve been praying about for years.
Situations you’ve been begging God for liberation and redemption from.
Yet you want to mock people going through their own trials, as if your family is free from crisis.
Your challenge may not look like theirs.
But pain is still pain.
It’s not always because of sin.
Sometimes, it’s just life.
Human beings dealing with real, heavy, human crises.
God forbid I ever laugh at another person’s child.
I won’t.
I’ve lost family to drug addiction despite all the discipline, all the prayers.
I’ve watched other people’s children fall and break on the other side of life.
And I’ve learned this:
Because it’s not your child, not your son, not someone in your own home —
you don’t understand.
You laugh.
You judge.
Until the wound is yours.
Until it’s your name in the headlines, your child in the struggle.
Then you finally understand what life and family crisis really feel like.
The media space should never give anyone the audacity to ridicule another family’s crisis.
To every parent, every family raising kids who are giving them a tough time:
I see you. I feel you.
I pray for you.
May God give you strength when you’re tired.
May He give you grace when you’re breaking.
May He give you courage to carry this burden.
And may God lift the veil — and bring healing, restoration, and peace to your home.
Ameen.
