Today in History
On the night of 07 June 2002, an Indian Air Force UAV, the Israeli‑made Searcher‑II, violated Pakistani airspace near Lahore while on an ISR mission. The ever‑vigilant PAF Air Defence System correctly identified the intruder, tracked it and monitored its small, slow‑moving, low‑flying profile.
Scrambled in response, an F‑16B of No 9 Squadron, flown by Squadron Leader Zulfiqar Ayub and Squadron Leader Afzal Awan, intercepted IAF's UAV. At the decisive moment, a heat‑seeking AIM‑9L missile was fired, shooting the UAV down at night. Its debris fell within Pakistani territory and was recovered. The interception marked a unique event in the history of combat aviation, where a UAV was destroyed at night by a fighter aircraft using a heat‑seeking missile. PAF air defence operators and Shaheens showed absolute resolve and phenomenal professionalism in achieving a kill that had hitherto been considered unachievable, underlining their professional acumen and their steadfast resolve to defend Pakistan’s aerial frontiers against any aggression or violation.
