Breakdown of the study:

This study estimates the global amount of article processing charges (APCs) paid to six major publishers (Elsevier, Frontiers, MDPI, PLOS, Springer Nature, and Wiley) for open access publishing between 2019 and 2023. APCs are fees charged by publishers for publishing articles in open access journals (gold) or making individual articles open access in subscription journals (hybrid).

1. The estimated global spend on APCs for the six publishers was $8.349 billion from 2019 to 2023, or $8.968 billion when adjusted for inflation.
a. 73.2% of the spend went to gold open access.
b. MDPI, Elsevier, and Springer Nature generated the most APC revenue in 2023.
c. Annual APC spend almost tripled from $910.3 million in 2019 to $2.538 billion in 2023.
2. The median APCs paid were higher than the median listed APCs for both gold and hybrid open access.

@zzeynepersoy Spain has a lot of great kinds of stuff! But clearly, extranjeria is not one of them. Most of non-European ex-pats (scientists and non-scientists), at some point we have problems with extranjeria and bureaucracy.
