Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR.

We don��t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use.

In his welcoming speech, the Director General of the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, Amb. Robert MASOZERA, emphasized the importance of this program and called on the #TheMuseumsLab2026 fellows to consider #Rwanda as their laboratory.

He added that during their six-day stay in Rwanda, the fellows will engage with the country’s history and memory, while exploring its rich cultural heritage, artists, communities, and emerging approaches to making heritage more relevant and meaningful to contemporary society.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, Amb. Robert MASOZERA highlighted that, for Rwanda, memory is not an abstract concept. It is deeply embedded in the country’s history and identity, and shapes how Rwandans understand and envision the future.

In this context, museums and memorial sites play a vital role in preserving and interpreting the different dimensions of Rwanda’s history, while creating spaces for reflection, learning, dialogue, and connection across generations.

Blood Transfusion: The importance of Blood Donor Screening in Kigali.

Blood screening is essential to ensure donated blood is safe for transfusion.
Researchers from Rwanda Biomedical Centre and partner institutions analyzed over 38,000 voluntary blood donation records from 2019–2023 and found that infections detected during screening were uncommon overall.

Key findings:

✅ Hepatitis B decreased from 0.76% to 0.41%.
✅Hepatitis C decreased from 0.30% to 0.18%.
✅Syphilis increased to 0.26%.
✅HIV remained stable at 0.04% - 0.08%.
✅First-time donors, males, and older people were predominant.

The findings showed differences between first-time and regular donors, reinforcing the importance of appropriate guidance for new donors and continued regular donation among eligible donors to maintain a reliable blood supply.

Today, Minister @nsanzimanasabin officially received the newly constructed hospital in Masaka, Kigali Health City, handed over by Ambassador Gao Wenqi, of the People’s Republic of China to Rwanda.

Constructed with support from the Government of China, the facility will soon become home to the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK). It will bring capacity to more than 700 beds, strengthening national teaching and tertiary referral services.

On behalf of the Government of Rwanda, Minister @nsanzimanasabin expressed appreciation for this important contribution and the decades-long partnership and people-to-people cooperation between Rwanda and China, looking forward to continued friendship and collaboration to strengthen health systems, save lives and improve the health and well-being of our people.
