The manner in which this regime does things makes you wonder whether these people have actual thinkers in their ranks. Does the NRM have people who understand that there will be a Uganda after the NRM? Do these people think the NRM is all there should be?
This much-talked-about Sovereignty Bill is absolute rubbish. It is dangerous, disastrous, and extremely unnecessary. Anyone who supports it does not love Uganda - they simply love the NRM. It’s as simple and straightforward as that.
We already have legislation that checks funding (whether local or foreign) suspected to be from questionable sources or intended for questionable purposes. Every day, people’s accounts are being frozen for these very reasons.
The Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, has explained in detail that this bill will set us back significantly and cause a severe economic shock. But no - the powers that be do not want to listen; they think they understand the economy better.
As for the lobbyists, MPs, politicians, political commentators, NRM sycophants, and influencers pushing for this bill, all I can say is that you are selfish, myopic, and extremely unpatriotic.
You've chosen to safeguard your interests and fill your stomachs and purses at the expense of other Ugandans. I hope those stomachs and purses weigh you down into your graves.
Bloodsuckers!
Everybody needs to reject this goddam Sovereignity Bill.
Uganda received $2.5 billion in remittances in 2025. That is 3.8% of our entire GDP. Over 16 million transactions, average value of $152 per transfer.
The Protection of Sovereignty Bill 2026 now says anything above UGX 400 million roughly $100,000 from a foreign source in a year requires written approval from the Minister of Internal Affairs.
Think about who is affected by this
Ugandans in the diaspora sending money home, NGOs running health and education programmes, creators earning from YouTube, Spotify, and international brand deals and businesses with foreign shareholders or investors.
The bill also defines a “foreigner” to include Ugandan citizens living outside Uganda. Your cousin in London sending money home could now be classified as a foreign agent.
The government says this is about sovereignty and transparency. Those are legitimate concerns because foreign interference in domestic politics is a real issue especially on the Africa soil.
But this bill does not just target that. It hands the Minister of Internal Affairs discretionary power to approve or reject any significant foreign inflow.
No independent oversight and violations carry up to 20 years in prison.
The Uganda shilling was the best performing currency in Africa last year. Bank of Uganda credited remittances and NGO inflows as part of the reason.
We are now proposing to put a ministerial gate on that very money.
Someone explain to me what problem this actually solves because from where I am standing, the people who will feel this first are not foreign governments. It will be the ordinary Ugandans.
The government owes us a clearer answer than “sovereignty”.

Illegal stay of 20,000 Ugandans in South Africa slows visa-free deal. According to immigration, many Ugandans reportedly travelled by land through Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe before sneaking into South Africa without visas, making it hard for the government to keep tabs on their movement https://t.co/rnW5Sk7GjN #MonitorUpdates
