Leaving the Dustbowl of Academia in search of fruitful labour | Preaching the Gospel of alt-ac employment | ๐ | memes | other stuff Iโm forgetting
The invisibility of academics seeking #alt-ac jobs + the stigma of leaving the academy is precisely why I created this account in the wake of #amsroc17. Trying to be the change I want to see in the #musicology field. https://t.co/3IJkiBpUsZ
"Some graduate students and professors want their departments to change their approach to training, but others remain skeptical" https://t.co/wiQq09h4Bj
Somehow Iโm already at a point with 2018 where I wouldnโt recognize a good omen, nor an auspicious sign, if either walked right up to me and smacked me in the face.
@MusicologyDuck @DFoslerLussier I liked this a lot, thanks for sharing. :) And it makes some really important points: certainly plenty of sanctimony on both sides of #AMS2018, which is no substitute for activism targeted at the power structures themselves, which @AMS was never going to do.
@DFoslerLussier @MusicologyDuck Those workers will take that $$ and treat themselves. Wanna know who tips really well? Service workers. Your/their $$ is going to go right back to helping the people at the bottom via sales tax, tips, and scheduling/demand/sales algorithms.
@DFoslerLussier @MusicologyDuck Want to know what #AMS2018 attendees could do to have an immediate + economic impact in San Antonio? TIP YOUR SERVICE PPL REALLY FUCKING WELL. >25% well. Be the reason they make bank that weekend.
@DFoslerLussier @MusicologyDuck Most importantly: the service industry ppl getting xtra hours/tips. Some weeks that extra $10 is all the difference: giving a kid pocket $ for a field trip. Putting xtra gas in the car. Buying an extra can of soup in anticipation for the next slow week.
@DFoslerLussier @MusicologyDuck That tax $$ paid to state (hotel) and city? Goes to things that make everyone's lives a little better, even in TX: public sector salaries. roads. schools. And ok sure, politicians' salaries (this true in every state tho, we're all paying 45).
@DFoslerLussier @MusicologyDuck The conference hotels will set schedules 1-3 weeks ahead of conference + no vacancies = all hands on deck. Service workers want their jobs to be busy: they're more likely to get a lot of hours (more $), and tips, depending.
@DFoslerLussier @MusicologyDuck Big conferences like #AMS2018 bring lots of $$ to local economies. A few of the ways this works: paying local taxes on hotel stay and purchases; tipping servers and shuttle drivers. ALSO: service industry staffing is mostly based on projected need.
@DFoslerLussier @MusicologyDuck It must have been a really hard decision, but it's defensible I think (not here to argue +/- btw). Someone today disagreed, reasoning that hotels are not locally owned and AMS doesn't support local communities anyway. This is incorrect.
